2004 Oldsmobile Alero GX (?) from North America

Not ready yet to make a conclusion

Faults:

Alero 2004 with 45.000 km on it.

This morning I noticed some "grinding" noise as speed was increasing. Brought it to the dealer. Diagnosis was the right front bearing to be replaced, + braking pads on the same wheel are worn out, too. $1.000.

General Comments:

Great on gas. V6, up to 35MPG highway, 22MPG city.

Wheels and driver side window are noisy.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

I have made previous remarks about my 2004 GLS Alero. When I bought the car, it had 91,000ks. It now has 126,000ks and still runs like a top. I've installed a few performance parts; pacesetter exhaust etc. The car gets great mileage, and for a six cylinder it is quick. The sound system sounds great, I just don't believe all the problems a few others are going through. Sounds like North American car bashers to me. I have driven a few Toyotas in the past, and no thanks.

Summary:

So far I like this car, even though I have a few minor problems here and there.

Faults:

I bought my car used, so of course there is normal ware and tear, but I do agree with previous comments that the brakes do squeak way too much.

The starter seems to be get stuck every once in a while after the car is obviously on and running.

After starting the car and shifting it into drive, the transmission jerks more than it should just to be put into drive. But mainly when I have the car in neutral and shift to drive is when it does it the most.

The glue holding the vinyl to the dash appears to have lost some of its bonding power because it is beginning come detached. As well as the paint chips off of the buttons on the CD player as well as the automatic lock and window switches.

And the cup holder isn't in a very logical place especially for larger cups. Cans are fine, but I find myself telling passengers to move their cups so I can put it into park.

General Comments:

Overall I am very satisfied with my car. It is a V6 automatic and has the get up and go that I have wanted. It gets decent gas mileage. That's why I miss my Camry, because it had way better fuel economy.

I believe that I paid way to much for it and would have rather continued to look elsewhere, but I needed a car A.S.A.P.

I like the sleekness in the appearance of the car. That is what appealed to me the most.

Summary:

Very unhappy with my alero

Faults:

Brakes are constantly going bad. Hub assembly's have been changed twice on both sides. Gas mileage is horrible. Paint chips off everything inside especially on the radio knobs. All this has been happening just after the warranty was up. The dealership does not help at all--very rude!! The dealership told me the car could use regular tires, but turns out it has to have high performance--which are lots more expensive!! Will never buy another oldsmobile again!!

General Comments:

The seats are comfortable though and it is roomy inside.

2004 Oldsmobile Alero GLS 3.4L V6 from North America

Summary:

I am proud to own #53/500 of the Final Aleros

Faults:

The only thing that has really gone wrong with the car is the brakes need changing already. I do ride the brakes sometimes so there's no surprise there. I plan on replacing them with Brembo's anyways.

Other than that nothing else has gone wrong with it yet.

General Comments:

I purchased the Final 500 edition mines #53. I love it.

The sound system is awesome.

The performance suspension handles the roads great, it's set right at the middle: it's stiff, but still absorbs the bigger bumps.

I gotta love the leather interior and sunroof especially the final 500's perforated leather interior.

2004 Oldsmobile Alero GL 3.4 V6 from North America

Summary:

Yet another reason to buy Japanese

Faults:

Replaced the sway bar bushings.

New tires went bald in 8,000 miles.

Two wheels where bent when I bought the car.

Now the wheel mount is bad, and I was told this is a common problem on the Alero's.

General Comments:

I was extremely impressed with this car when I bought it. It handled well, and had more power then I was use to. Although, for the size of the engine, it is underpowered. Chrysler makes a much smaller 6 cylinder engine that gets just as much horsepower, and the new Civics get almost as much power with a small 4 cylinder.

This car was GM Certified when I bought it, which I assumed meant there was nothing wrong with it. I have had it in the shop 7 times in the 9 months that I've owned it. The bent wheels were missed by 2 General Motors mechanics, who where looking for the reason my car was vibrating a lot, and only found when I went to have my tires balanced and rotated.

I have now had my car in the shop 4 times to fix another popping noise around my front wheels. The first time, they did a lube job, and told me the noise should go away, if it didn't, it was probably a bad strut. The noise didn't go away, so I took it back. This time they told me the sway bar bushings were bad, even though the sway bar bushings had been replaced a few months earlier by another dealer. When I took it back to the other dealer (the same dealer that missed the bent wheels), they said they couldn't reproduce the noise, and had no intentions of actually looking at my sway bar bushings. A week later, the noise got worse, so I took it back. This time they heard the noise, said it's not the sway bar bushings (which they would replace for free), but the wheel mount, a part that will cost me $400 to replace.

Wheels don’t just get bent. It sounds like your car may have been in an accident that damaged the front suspension and possibly the unibody. I don’t know what “GM certified” means, but maybe there is some recourse for this. You might want to take it to an independent body shop to look for more hidden damage. It’s too bad that your first thought is to blame poor quality and jump to “yet another reason to buy Japanese.” Good Luck.

I don't even know how many times I've had mine in the shop! Mine was GM Certified as well. I'm so glad I bought the extended warranty. It has paid for itself three times!

I find it hard to believe two so called mechanics missed bent wheels while looking for vibrations - unacceptable for sure. I agree with the previous commentor, I'd suspect some sort of collision damage happened before you got the car.

You're really fooling yourself if you think all your car troubles will disappear with a Japanese offering. Just like domestic cars, all Japanese brands have certain troublesome models.

I'm a wholesale buyer and see them all the time. Just like the domestics, some are pretty bulletproof, and some are a real pain.

Don't worry, you're not jumping to blame them. My Alero makes a popping noise and I have had it looked at a couple of times, same 400 dollar part is needed. I have had two collisions in this car.
