I just bought a 1997 aurora after driving a year or so in a 1995 aurora. The newer car (1997) has a bad oil leak and smokes excessively. I was planning to swap the two engines as the older car isn't drivable after being hit one night (rear end totalled). Both cars have autobahn packages and have the same northstar 4.0L V8. If anyone knows if there is any problems when swapping the two, or any sensors, chips, or anything else that needs to be changed also, please email me at binarysucks1010@hotmail.com. thanks.
Just recently we started to experiance the "Hard Shifting". We paid $800 for new motor mounts and it did not fix the problem. Now we just let it run for atleast least 30 seconds before we shift into reverse and that seems to have helped.
The big headache with this car has been the defrosting system. We baught it in Nevada and we drive in Utah. The air blows hot, but the windows fog up completely unless you leave the back windows down part way. Any suggesstions!!!
We currently have a 95 Aurora, and have had it for years. I liked the one I was driving so well, we got one for my husband. I drove mine until the air conditioner blew hot air and the fix was quoted at $800. Since the car had 220,000 miles on it, I traded it for 96 that caught my eye. The 96 I traded for was a nightmare. $2,000 per month for 4 months in repairs on top of the car payment was ludicrous. I finally managed to get a mechanic to fix everything so no "service engine soon" lights came on and traded it for a Honda. I still have the Honda. I later purchased a 1997 Aurora. This one was a lemon. It had overheating issues, air conditioning (driver's side cold, passenger side heat blew out). Of all the ones I've owned, the first one was the best. It made it past 200,000 miles without any issues. The one my husband currently has is at 150,000 and just starting to cause problems. It will kick out of overdrive and then has to be shut off and turned on, then proceed in 3rd. We replaced the tranny solenoids and even though one was visibly broken, the replacement did not fix the problem. If you have experienced something like this and found a fix, please let me know. So far, we replaced motor mounts and the hub assembly with speed sensors on this vehicle, as well as the tranny sensors. Other than that, it's been routine maintenance (oil change, tires). I'd like to find out the cause of the car on cruise control at 65 going great for miles, then all of a sudden coasting (drops out of overdrive) but racing rpms. After that, restart car so rpms don't race while driving in 3. Thanks for your help. olivia_vvs@yahoo.com.
I have a 1995 oldsmobile aurora with 100,000 miles on it. when I place the car in park it races up to 4,000 rpms. the gm dealership is putting in a new throttle position sensor and a power steering switch ($600) I had to get a new starter and battery as well labor and parts came to be $900. the dealership is telling me that the throttle body (part) is discontinued, and there is no way to get this part. the service engine light is on, overall I'm very dissapointed in the car.
If anyone can give me some advice that would be great.
Thanks.

I have owned my 95 Aurora for almost 14 years as of October 1994. Never had any major repairs, just regular maintenance. But you do once in a while have to have some things repaired; that is normal. Stuff like brakes, rotors, tires. All have to do with how you treat your car.
It has 205,990 miles on it. Still runs fabulous. It is the best luxury car ever. Very comfortable, and you are riding in style. It has been working great since I bought it about 14 years ago. I love it a whole lot.
I also own a 2001 Aurora V6 3.5L, which is a little bit better on gas, smaller than the 95-99 Auroras, not as much horse power, not much improvement, but it does get you better gas mileage when you go on the highway; it about gets you 400 miles on a full tank of gas. I get about 18-19 miles per a gallon in city driving.
2001 Auroras great cars also. Bought the 2001 used with 70,000 miles on it, and it still drives great; just not enough horsepower like the V8's. I recommend this as being the best luxury car ever made.
I HAVE A 1995 AURORA AND IT HAS STARTING PROBLEMS. THE KEY IS STUCK IN THE IGN., BUT IT WOULD START UP AND RUN. RESENTLY THE CAR WILL START AND RUN, BUT I WOULD HAVE TO TURN THE IGN. ON AND WAIT UNTILE THE COLLANT FAN GOES OFF BEFORE IT WILL START AND RUN AGAIN. HELP ME FIGURE IT OUT!!!

I bought a 95' about 2 years ago. I loved the car from the moment I saw it.
The locking converter never worked from the beginning. Within a year I had tranny problems. I brought it into the dealer, the guy pulled the dipstick, smelled burnt oil and said it was shot. Well I left it sit for awhile (3 months) and then started it up. It ran fine, the tranny worked like a dream, then I changed the fluid (I changed the fluid, not a dealer). There were a lot of shavings and some pins in the pan. I cleaned the pan, filled it with fluid, and it worked great for about 300 miles. I could spin tires, it never slipped a bit, but then it started gearing down. It's full of shavings again. Well to the best of my knowledge, this is not the tranny, it is the torque converter. My guess is that the clutch is out in it, thus the reason the locking never worked and all the shavings. Does this sound like it might be the problem?
I bought my 1995 Aurora and it is a piece of junk! Test drove like a dream so I bought it. The next day it had trouble starting, and ever since it has had problems shifting, idle revving up and down, locking button on shifter is stuck and have to use tons of pressure to push in, driver's side lock unlocks, but does not lock, ventilation system turns on and off when ever it feels like it, radio and clock do not shut off on their own, and to top it all off, the car broke down on me and my son while we were leaving the park yesterday.
I really wish I had stumbled across this web site earlier. I would not have bought this car (I have only had this car a month). I would highly recommend that you buy some other make and model. This was the first year this car was built and it has tons of defects. I have not met a single mechanic or dealer who haves not told me to either sell it while it is still running, or if I could take it back to where I bought it. You can put a lot of $$ into fixing it and still have a nightmare on your hands. My loss is hopefully your gain. Kungfurebel@yahoo.com
I have owned the 96 aurora for 10 yrs now. I have read every comment written. I have had everyone of the problems listed at least once. I have to admit when the car is on it's best behavior. It runs like a dream, otherwise it is an enigma. My latest dilemma is the transmission problems that is so commonly mentioned. I have taken it to a very reputable transmission mechanic. That insist I need a new transmission, but with my past experiences. Every problem has always ended up, having somthing to do with some sort of an electronic connection. Can anyone tell me how many solenoids the transmission has (I only saw two) or can anyone tell me if there is a class action law suit. That I can get on board with? These cars should have been completely recalled years ago. The only recall I have ever found. Is the fuel rail system. The rest of the malfunctions were on my dime.

I have a 1995 Old Aurora. It had 75,000 miles when I bought her. I thought best car I've ever owned. After reading all comments from everyone, I have had every problem all you have had. She has 136,000 miles now. She has oil changed every 3000 miles. When recall on fuel rail came I had it done. Well, I've had nothing, but $$ problems since. The starter was replaced 3 weeks after that. It costs $500. They would not let me buy a rebuilt starter, they said only a new one. Replace tires. oh yes. My air conditioner has been fixed 3 times, doesn't work right now, I pour coolient in it all summer, & summer, & summer & I will have cool air for a little while then she blows hot, only on one side. I have the heating problem too. Won't get warm, only blows on one side. Now I have a blown radiator. I've replaced starter,2 compressors, air charged & found no leaks. I paid $500. for 1 air charge. Wasted my money. I got life time breaks because they have to be changed out so much. My X-hubby wrecked her, shortly after I bought her, he claimed the master cylinder didn't work & he had no breaks. After the wreck I replaced the cradle, the air conditioner core, the radiator, the front win shield all at my cost. He collected all money for the wreck & I got nothing, but you fix it yourself. Mind u, I should have typed x wrecked her, then told you all I have replaced you all understand. Also, I replaced a roter due to being faulty, cost $150.I can't afford a better car, I have no money, I just drive her back & forth to work, can't see out the win shied in the morning for the ice, burn up in the summer cause I have no air, She's hot hot on me red lining to where she will shut off herself. I pray we all can get together & do something about all our problems with these cars/ I love her so much, nice ride, but very pricey. Feel free to contact me : dodgetate@yahoo.com.
I purchased a 1995 Oldsmobile Aurora with 64,000 miles. When I got it the Engine Service Soon light was not on. The Air Conditioning did not work so I had a new Air Conditioning Unit Installed for $1400.00. After it was installed the Engine Service Soon Light came on Shortly After. With the Light on when you would start the car or put it in gear it would jerk violently and make a loud thud like the transmission mount was broken. One of the Codes it displayed when I had the service codes reviewed was one of the Engine Crank Sensors had failed. I had that replaced for $175.00 and the Light was off for an hour or two. It then came on and goes on and off for different periods of time. The other code that is showing up is that The Transmission Solenoid Shaft Sensor is Faulty and needs to be replaced. When this code is displayed it puts the Computer into LIMP back to the Dealer or Service Station Mode. It makes the car lurch and jerk when putting it into drive or reverse after starting. I took it to several places and they all said that the Transmission Needed to be Rebuilt Soft or Hard or Replaced at a cost 0f $1500.00 to $4000.00 depending on the Place because the Transmission Solenoid Shaft Sensor is Internal to the Transmission. The car shifts perfectly when the Light is NOT ON and goes into gear normally when the light is off. Sometimes it will go several hours or days OFF and several hours and days ON. Is there any way to Disable Just that Code From The Computer so it will operate correctly without taking the Transmission apart. Is there anyway to disable the Transmission Solenoid Shaft Sensor? The Car shifts and goes into gear perfectly when the Engine Service Soon Light is OFF. Can anyone advise me on what can be done inexpensively to correct this problem (bclark8us@yahoo.com)?
The Trunk Lid was left open on my car while I was on vacation. It was inadvertently shut when someone saw it open. The Battery is now dead (discharged) and the remote entry unlocker for the trunk and the door will not work. I tried the ignition key several times in the door, but it did not unlock. Does anyone know if the Ignition Key is supposed to Unlock any of the Doors or Trunk in the event that you have a discharged battery or lose your remote opener or it goes dead (low battery)? I appreciate the answer quickly so I do not call a Locksmith to open it (bclark8us@yahoo.com).
I have a '97 aurora with 124K miles. My issue is electrical.
The tail lights and dash lights do not come on either manually or automatically. All other lights work: brakes, high beams, turning signals... just the tail lights and dash lights refuse to come on. The fuses were looked at and are good. Any suggestions on where else to look?
Thanks

I've worked at mechanics shops, torn apart my cars in the dark, and have thrown break-down fits over cars. Now, I decide I would buy an aurora as I have never seen one before. I bought it for 1500 bucks, TCS and ABS lights on, pretty sure it's a sensor from OBD. Then it started getting loud, and was told it's a plugged converter. I was told that something might be causing the converter to plug up. Then, there is oil coming off the engine. I think I'm going to try to seal the oil leak with an additive rather than doing thousands in repairs.
Might as well should have paid 1500 bucks for a little red tricycle. At least they stay together for more than 24 hours and are much more reliable. HA!
Does anyone know if oil leaks might be tied to the converter being plugged? Email me at above address if you have any idea. Otherwise, back to the drawing board. And time to save 80 bucks to buy the little red trike...
I have a 95 Aurora as well and it has 170K. I just got it and have had a few problems myself, but so far not too bad of a car.. I have had the problem with the trans.. but I own a scanner so I just reset the PCM and all is good..
This car sounds like a trap.. very glad I didn't have to spend lots of money, but I would like to hear more about any suit or recalls.. as I would attest to all of your problems.. Contact me at sherryfrancis1105@verizon.net
