"Aurora's Are LEMONS"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I have 95 Aurora when I bought the car it drive smooth and I had no problems. Few months later it started to surge I took it the dealer and they said it was my EGR value I got it replace and its still surge today. The second problem was it not smooth out once I got it in first gear it sounds like the transmission so when I stop the car turn the car off start it back up put in first again it smooths out drives like new car. the Third problem is when I stop at a red light the car dies out. I don't know whats the problem I got the oxygen sensor, map senor, a full tune-up, computer, radiator, and a water pump anyone got any suggestions.

General comments?

Nice car, but too many problems I think it was a LEMON when bought it.

Dear Mr. I thought it was lemons owner; Northstar engines like the one your Aurora has, have a problem with the fuel pressure regulator which does not appear anywhere on the scanner, but only when you drive them, sometimes emanating smoke, sometimes stalling, sometimes giving you a very poor fuel economy; but before you buy this part, just to be sure, disconnect the vacuum hose above it, and if it smells like gasoline, or has gasoline inside it, then change it.

Auroras are great cars, but I have found very bad comments against them, for problems like the one you have, but let me tell you, I own an Aurora model 95, I bought it used and it came with its problems, but the comfort and the performance it gives me really makes me love this car, it fills me with satisfaction just to look at it, and enjoy to race it and feel how it takes the turns so sporty with no inclination at all. This is a car with the best of both worlds: luxury and sport driving.

I bought my Aurora '95 early 2000 and had my ups and downs with it. First of all, I love the interiors, the dashboard that makes you feel like a pilot, everything within reach and very well laid out. The Stereo System (Bose) is very need and flawless. Seats are very nice, completely electrical and even heated. As I mentioned before, my Aurora was already 5 years old and had about 70K Miles on the scale, but it looked like new, at least from the outside. No rust whatsoever.

The main problems I've encountered are the little, but costly details as well as some mayor replacements I had to go through.

1.- Traction control module failed after an intense engine wash. The connector was not as water tight as it looked and short circuited the module. Unfortunately this module is also holding the ABS System which still worked OK. Well, I had to buy a new module (actually a used one, but still $250 + Installation). The mechanic told me that it was not really necessary to replace the module, but the annoying red traction control light was on at all times. Very bright during night rides, I even covered it with a tape at some time.

2.- Starter Harness in the steering column had a bad switch. This was the most dangerous condition, because the car was shutting down on me during highway driving without any reason. It just went off and if it weren't for the door lock noise (unlocking the doors) I wouldn't even notice that the car was off. I sent the car many times to the shop and it never failed there, even at the Olds dealer they declared me officially "nuts". It was a 3 month continuous headache. First the diagnostic did not report any failure, then I had to change key and starter, but nothing helped. Finally one mechanic replaced the $40 dollar harness and the problem was gone.

3.- Leak on the gas supply lines (seem to be made out of very hard plastic that supplies each cylinder) which almost burned down my car. The gasoline smell in the interiors were really tough! This leak seemed to be bad workmanship of the supplier, because there is no reason why the tube was pinched. I did not exchange it due to extremly high cost, just covered it with a piece of rubber hose and a screw-on bracket. It worked :o)

4.- Dust in the glove compartment. Minor issue, but very annoying here in New Mexico.

5.- Replacement of the fog lamp bulbs is totally unacceptable! Not impossible, but really not very user friendly. Luckily I had to change it only once so far.

6.- The usual power window motors that fail after a certain amount of years (so far 2 have been exchanged by me), are pretty much normal.

Overall:

I love the car. It looks like it had a lot of details, but all my other cars had similar issues as well. I have no clue how well the car was maintained before I bought it, but now with all the details repaired, doing all suggested liquid changes every 3 months, I really love this car. It is very high tech and should be treated gently. Now it is 10 years old and runs as smooth as new. The only real dark side is the V-8 fuel economy. I noticed it lately due to the high gas prices :o (
