1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass review from North America
"A quick large car with suprisingly good handling and looks"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The problems I had with this vehicle have been having to replace the Fuel Pump, Water Pump, Starter, Radiator, Speedometer Cable, and installing a emergency brake cable. I also rebuilt the transmission on the car after I blew it out which was my fault for running it a little too hard. The air conditioning also still needed to be charged up, a new belt and clutch and possilbly a new pully and bearings.
General comments?
I bought this cutlass with 90,000 original miles (12,000 miles since the restoration of the vehicle, the odometer was rolled back after the rebuild.) I bought the car with in May of 2004 in riverside california when I was 17 years old. It had a fresh $4,000 paint job and a recently rebuilt 350, which was rebuilt to 1969 350 4 barrel specifications. The engine was striped down to the block and the entire motor was rebuilt with mostly parts from a very low mileage 350 4 barrel out of a 69 RS Camaro. The entire upper end of the motor was built from the camaro 350 block. I put a Kenwood CD player and 2 door speaker 2 6 by 9 speakers and a 12 inch Rockford Fosgate sub and 2 amps in the trunk. I also replaced the carpet and put new vinal/cloth custom seats in the car and a new reveiw mirror. I also rebuilt the tranny on the car and I also redid the brakes. The car did get up and go, it certainly wasnt wickedly quick. It ran 0-60 in 7 seconds and had a 1/4 mile time of mid 14 seconds. It was about as quick as a newer Cadillac Deville or a infinity G35 sedan. I put new shocks on the Car and p245 tires and it handled and took corners better than many newer mid size and full size vehicles. I recently sold it in March of 2008 for $15,000. I paid 6,250 for it in 2004 so even after puting about 4,000 into it I still came out well ahead. I was definitly a fun car which got lots of looks and turned heads. I am now in the process of looking for another partially restored classic car that I can finish with some custom interior and stereo options and enjoy for another few years until I do it again. It definitly did cost a little money to run with only 91 premium fuel but it was a quick car that was plenty fun to drive and was a joy to cruise in!!!
