This piece of junk never would run right
no matter what mods I made.
I know that it's been 30 years since I
owned this hunk of trash, but I want to tell this story now.
I bought a 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass on
the spur of the moment 36 years ago,
without even looking at it at all. I did this to act like a big man to my
girlfriend, who was with me at the time.
(My girlfriend was not only a mentally
retarded idiot, but actually insane.)
As it turned out, there was so much
wrong with this brick, the space here
is not large enough to detail all the
trouble and aggravation I had with it.
Even so many years later on, I still
feel like a jerk for having bought it
the way I did.
However, every Oldsmobile that I have
owned after the 1966 junkbox has been
an excellent car.
I bought a 66 Cutlass in 67 -- best car I ever owned. I wish I could buy one now! Not a convertible, a four-door or a 442. Haven't found one yet.
OMan. Mine was Silver, two-door, ordered with a Hurst 4-speed and black bucket seats. I really wanted a 442, but no wife-acceptance-factor, nor budget for one, appeared.
Anyway, it was a V8, single four-barrel carb, and at first it did all right. Shifter clicked like a bolt-action rifle, although really long throw.
However, dealer visits soon became weekly. It needed a valve-job and AC compressor at 24K miles, a new clutch-plate and throw-out bearing at 30K. Threatening a second valve-job, dealer decided it was worn lobes on the cam-shaft, or else the timing chain was loose.(i.e.: $750 or live-with-it...). Got 12-15mpg, and had scant room for the new daughter's infant seat in back. Absolute POS.
Long story short: Dumped it at 70k mi. for a new 1973 Volvo 164, and have since refused to ever in my life own another American car.
FWIW,
AMc.
