1992 Opel Astra GLS review from Portugal
"A reliable all-rounder"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
A few km's from new, alternator strap tensioner got loose and was replaced.
Head gasket and piston seal rings blown at 130.000km after some months of intensive revving.
Emergency lights switch changed twice (common Opel flaw).
Rear muffler changed about 3 or 4 times.
General comments?
Even though some items had been replaced, after almost 12 years of daily city usage, I consider it quite a reliable car.
The engines pulls hard for a 8 valve 1400 and the fact that almost every single day hits the redline shows it durability.
The interior is well built, but lacks of cheerfulness.
The handling is good, but not overwhelming. It depends too much on the grip of the tires fited.
Gas mileage is about 25 mpg in aggressive driving. In relaxed driving 35mpg can be achieved.
In conclusion this car is a good all-rounder, with a strong engine and quite reliable.
