1991 Opel Rekord 200i CLE review from Netherlands
"A piece of luck"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Repaired the Motronic computer wire harness because of water coming in.
Repaired a water leak at the windshield (right corner).
Removed rust at the doors and painted them again.
Replaced the coolant tank as it was torn and leaky.
Replaced all the burned lamps on the dashboard.
Repaired the wiring for the fuelpump and the aircofans (airco works a lot better now).
General comments?
So here is my dutch review of an South African Opel Rekord 200i CLE imported in Holland in 1994 by the first owner.
This was the Opel Rekord I looked for! No weak differential, a proper 5 speed gearbox and a 2 liter 122 HP OHC engine, which is strong and economic too.
In my previous review about the 1986 Opel Rekord 2.0s, I mentioned the weak driveline of that car giving me worries about towing heavy trailers... I took it apart for parts and this one took over its role of duty.
This S.A. Opel takes it all very easily, no pain, no fuss.. when I put my 2200 pound non braked trailer behind it, the car performs very good.
But there is luxury too! Working aircon, power windows, power steering, central lock.. it all goes fine and were expensive options on a german Rekord, so almost none will have those.
The ride is quite firm, the braking is very good.. it has bigger brakes with ventilated discs on the front, and due to its short reduction (3.89) it's very fast even in fifth gear, until now it brings me a lot of joy to drive it and I got used too RH driving quickly.
I have some photos of it on the Australian site "just Commodores,1984 opel rekord 2.0s" where I also explain the differences between german Rekords and this as well with lots of photos.
