1992 Peugeot 106 XSi review from UK and Ireland

"Fantastic and underated"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Fuel pump.

Exhaust.

Temperature switch for radiator fan.

Head gasket.

General comments?

Is very quick for a 1.4, but has the 100bhp which really shifts between 30-60 mph.

Has as much torque as a North Korean hair dryer once you put one of more passengers in the car.

Problems I have encountered are expected on a car of this age. Rust is minimal on the body work, but have found some behind the rear wheels.

Pedals are a little close together, but you get used to it.

Interior upholstery is a bit weird and I'm not keen on the blue carpet. Peugeot did sort this out on the later 1.6 XSi, which had a slightly more refined interior.

Paint work started to fade on the roof a few years ago, I recommend not trying to polish it up, it just leaves circular marks all over the roof. The rest of the paint work is very good for a 16 year old car.

Motorways can grow tiresome as it sits at 4000rpm at 70mph. It is best suited on sweeping country roads, not long distance cruising.

Exterior finish is amazing and it has some great extras over the base model phase 1 106. The alloys are great looking, and the car itself is subtle enough to stop you looking like the idiots in the 90's who were crashing 205 GTi's on a weekly basis.

Remote central locking on a car of this age is surprising but it does need a bit of swinging your arm about to get it to lock/unlock.

Have a go in a 106 XN and then in a 106 XSi, and you will notice the difference. They put the 1.4 in some other models like the XS and the Roland Garros. But this is the 100hp 1.4 and was apparently quicker than the 205 GTi 1.6 back when it came out in 1991.
