1998 Peugeot 106 GTi review from UK and Ireland

Catalytic converter was replaced at 30,000 miles.

Drive-shaft needed repairing due to slight leak from seal.

Idling can be rather erratic when engine is warm.

I've only owned the GTI for about 2 months, but already I am loving it. The car may be small, but it makes up for that in style and quickness.

This car is very quick with a 0-60 of around 7.7 seconds standard, with a few minor modifications this can be brought down further. It will beat virtually any other hatchback off the lights and many more expensive cars. The engine is strong and revs nicely round to 7000rpm, most of the power comes in after 4000rpm.

Handling is also very impressive, it makes you feel confident on the corners with it's grippy tyres, stiff dampers and communicative power steering. It is a joy to take out on the country roads.

In the styling department this car looks the part with a nice subtle bodykit, rear spoiler, 14" wheels and round front fogs. The car has a nice sporty and aggressive look without being over the top.

The interior will vary depending on the individual car, leather and suede is the best and most comfortable to go for. Space is very good in the front although the pedals may feel cramped for bigger people. Space in the rear could be better.

The safety aspect of the car has been criticised by some, but it isn't too bad. It comes with ABS, brake discs all round, airbag, side impact bars and alarm/immobiliser.

The GTI is a true hot hatch with impressive performance and handling, just be warned insurance and petrol costs can be quite high.
