1997 Peugeot 106 XRD review from UK and Ireland

"Good runabout just seriously consider a Warranty!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Well where to begin;

Just after I bought it it required a new Clutch.

New linkages on the gearbox.

Brake's req new pads all-round and disc's on the front and drums on the rear.

And.

New parts fitted to the front passenger side suspention.

Since then and within the last year the following parts have also been replaced;

After a period of heave mileage about 3000 in 10 days the disc's on the front warped and needed replacing again!

Both left and right (not at the same time) rear wheel cylinders failed and req replaced.

The box that controls the glow plugs shorted and needed replaced, it left the car unable to start one morning on my way to work!, also damaged all glowplugs at the same time and those have needed to be replaced.

The power steering pump failed recently and has needed replaced at the same time the wiper stalk started playing up (intermittant wipe function became erratic) and req replacing also.

And the last problem was that it cut out on the motorway last week on my way home. the problem seemed electrical and whilst having a service was traced down to be a faulty alternator belt tensioner? what ever that is, but has cured the problem and also an annoying whining noise that was starting to worry me!.

General comments?

After all the problems the car has had I must admit I still have respect for the little thing. Apart from really annoying glitches the car runs superb.

I agree totally with the other reviews regarding economy, it's great I usually get between 50 and 55 mpg and I do a few miles in town as my way to work often means sitting in traffic for about 30 minutes or so each way.

And that brings me onto the next best thing, the cabin. It has virtually no rattles to speak of and is wearing fantastic for the age and mileage and everything apart from a niggly stereo (not manufacturers, and one a previous owner has botched) works perfect. it's also a comfortable place to travel, tested to the limit when I and 2 friends took the 106 on holiday with us and it racked up 3000 troble free miles with ease.

Yes that's right 3 people, luggage and some duty free on the way home made it all the way to italy and back in a 7 year old 80000 mile 106 in actually quite good comfort, But the holiday did also greatly show up the REAL weak link in the package, the sheer lack of power, I am not a fast driver, but these things border on the point of being dangerously slow, you really must think well in advance before making a move, any type of driving maneuver.

I must admit I still miss my old Volvo (things like heated seats and mirrors, air-con etc), but not as much as I thought I would, the change from a big family car to a small hatchback like the 106 is not as bad as it sounds, and every time I miss the old Volvo, I think of the better (much better) economy and cheeper road tax and Insurance!.

My experience from this car is what fantastic things Warranty's are when things go wrong, I'm "delighted" to say the least that I payed for one when I got the car, and when it runs out soon I will certainly be getting another!

Also just a final thing separate from the car, I would just like to add what a fantastic product Diamond Bright from Jewelultra is, it cose me £250 to have the whole car inside and out treated and it's great. it's one of those lifetime polish things so you don't need wax your car, and it really does work, I am now almost a year on and after only a quick was the car comes up Ace, it honestly looks every bit as good as the day I got it, and I live up country lanes so the car gets absolutely filthy this time of year, but this treatment hasn't caused any fuss at all, just a quick was is all it takes, absolutely fantastic worth every penny! If you are ever offered it give it some thought.
