In reply to the person who has £5k to blow on a new car - I would take the Clio and day of the week!

I have owned a Clio 16v, a 106GTi and currently own a Clio Williams, so I have fair idea of both cars!

The Clio 16v I had was brilliant and wish that I had never sold it. The Williams I have at the moment is even better than the 16v - and if you can get one for £5k, then I would try to get a Williams. The only downside is that the Williams is insurance group 17 (The Clio 16v is a group 12. The 106GTi is a group 13)

Both Clio's that I have had have been extremely reliable and the service from Renault has been great when I have had the cars serviced.

If you want to know my opinions about the 106GTi, read my review here: http://www.carsurvey.org/review_12201.html

My mate also had a S reg 106 GTi and he had just as many problems with the car and with the dealers as I did. I have not got a good word to say about Peugeot.

Best bet though, is to drive one of each! :P.

I am running a completely standard 106 gti. What concerns me slightly is the very strangled air filter system. I have looked at a lot of aftermarket induction systems and the only two that I would even consider fitting are the ecosse ram air kit or the Peugeot sport ram air kit. they both are identical except the Ecosse kit uses silicon hoses and the peugeot kit uses polished steel. These kits appeal to me as they both are sealed chambers so only cold air can enter them, where as all the other kits draw the hot air from the manifold. Has any one fitted one of these kits and if so is there a noticeable gain inc. loss of that horrible flat spot between 1st and 2nd.

Look forward to your replies.

I wrote the original article and feel obliged to answer some of the many comments it has provoked!

Firstly the spec:

Engine- *Next cams up from "Fast Road" by Kent Cams with extreme exhaust profile.

*Air Box gutted back to nearly nothing to provide direct intake.

*Cat removed from exhaust system.

*Custom chip reprogram specifically for Cams (car won't even run without it).

*195.45.15 wheels (slightly smaller radius than standard 185.55.14's.

*And for the guy that asked it was mauritius blue.

Facts- *0-60 was based on the cars I managed to beat that where being thrashed flat out,

these included a Corrado VR6 which I nearly accellerated into the back of.

*to the tool with the first comment, I said 140mph as the needle went past the 140

that the speedo shows quite easily so I rounded down!, as for that bull about the

limiter, part of the chip reprogram was to remove the limiter.

*Revs would sail through and past the red zone in 5th.

*Fuel consumption was stupid, a 6 litre Viper would feel economical.

*Car felt no quicker inside due to no real increase in tourqe only very rapid climbing

speedo gave game away.

Advice- Don't bother modifying a modern car as it's more trouble than it's worth, the 106 is

a great little car that no only hanldles extremely well, but is now cheaper and has a

3 year warranty instead of the pitiful 1 year it used to.

I blew my engine and buy the time i'd fixed it all, I had spent 20k on this car which as

I earn vastly more than my car suggests was only an annoying learning experience.

That comment wasn't to sound good, it's to enforce the point that if you've saved up

your money to buy such a car "LEAVE IT STANDARD" if you need the performace

get a Clio Cup 172 as I believe they are only a grand or so more than the 106 GTi.

The 106 gti is a superb drivers car. Even Big G. Clarkson puts it 2nd place to a Ferrari for handling.

As far as my 106 gti is concerned, it lowered 60mm, omp strut brace, dual exit exhaust system and window tints.

Mine is on a V-reg and has had over 140mph showing on the clock... won't do that too often if I were you!!

To the person who 'doesn't have a good thing to say about peugeot...' that is your own opinion, personally I have had no problems what so ever with the car and there is many people out there to back this up. I will agree that dealers are not too willing in the 'help' department, but again its all down to who you speak to on the day. You will find me and other enthusiasts at www.peugeot-gti.net if interested.

5 years ago I bought my 106gti I fitted a peugeot sports ram air induction kit combined with power boost valve and full mongoose exhaust with cat replacement pipe. just came off rolling road with 142 bhp.. not bad for 500 quid worth of mods. leaving it at that for now. had 137 mph before but wud be mad to try for 140 due being on last warning from judge to whether to recieve a custodial sentence for next traffic offence...lol...this car is great except after 41,000 miles I'm on second engine due to snapped woodruff key which pinged the timing belt off at 90mph,,,, not good!factory fault, peugeot paid for the lot, just aswell at 2k. oh three clutches and two gear boxes later and I'm still kicking ass on the streets... luv burning mini coops and 172's..feels great!

My sundance yellow 106gti has a full service and has covered 45000 miles,i fixed the alarm with the press of the steering column button every time I leave it, I fixed the leaky sunroof with window sealer and a new rubber, as for poor dealers??? where are you lot getting your cars serviced??? I have mine serviced at Fussell Wadmans of Devizes in wiltshire and they couldnt do enough for me, exellent service.

I have had no more problems, apart from a heavy right foot, which got me a speeding ticket, but I have cured that problem with a sr6 neo snooper.

Happy servicing.

Great little car.

Like the 205 GTi, this is one of those cars that should just be left alone. It's nigh on perfect as it is. If you want straightline speed, go and spend £500 on a mk2 Astra GTE 16v for those traffic light grand prix moments. The rest of the time, just enjoy one of the finest FWD chassis ever designed, with an engine that produces just about the right amount of power to give it a workout, without spoiling its balance. Peugeot knew best in this case.

Had my 106 for 8months & had a head gasket problem, but otherwise this car performs well enough as standard - only mods I may be doing is upgrading the brakes so that I can drop from 121mph & make the roundabouts propably.

Have had the alarm go off afew times & have been told the button above ignition is to turn the interior sensors off, so what are the inside sensors for??? any answer on how to solve this problem.

With regards to all the people complaining of alarms going off all the time, I've never looked at the standard alarm control unit, but every other one I've seen has a little screw to change the sensitivity of the sensors. Try adjusting it. The control unit is normally fitted at the top of the drivers foot-well, above the pedals. Or it could be behind the fuse/relay box.

I've had my 106 gti for a year and 8 month, fitted full exhaust system inc manifold. Gas flowed head, cams and superchipped. Also fitted gearbox from 106 rallye mk1.And let me tell you it goes like stink, (0-60 6.8 seconds) and 135mph top speed only because of gear ratios. I've never had any problems with the car and love driving it fast. Beaten plenty of cars at traffic lights inc 306 gti6,saxo vts,205mi16,rs turbos and would challenge anything within reason. Hey it aint no 1.1 but it does me for a laugh!

I was a big fan of the old 205 gti owning several. A few weeks ago a lad in a 106 gti made me smile when he raced me from the lights and through two roundabouts he went through the corners like it had glue on the tyres brilliant. Had to wait for the road to straighten to wind him back in (modded Volvo T5R 300+bhp).Going to buy the wife one!
