My mate has a 172 and my girlfriend's 106 GTI did have it off the line, and OK the Clio edged up on straights, but it wasn't by much, and in the bends the Clio was left for scrap!!! My GTi-6 slaughered both!!! The Clio was always trailing behind me, just proves to me that with Renault, you get what you pay for - and that means RIPPED OFF -

I have a 106 gti with 168bhp, it's been treated to a ported and polished head, bigger valves, CAT 708 cams, Ecosse induction air feed/green filter, a de-cat, an ECU remap, Raceland 4-2-1 stainless steel manifold and straight through 2.5inch stainless steel exhaust pipe, Bilstein sport dampers & eibach pro springs, spherical top mounts, powerflex bushes throughout, lower and upper strut braces and group A engine mounts. Rebuilt gearbox with quaife limited slip differential.

This gives a tuned gti-6 a real race, and is not far off an Impreza.. really surprised me!! It annihilates Astra GSI's with the 2L 16v redtop engine. My mate has just bought a new 182, and to be fair it is a really close race, there's literally not much in it... although I still always win!! Handling wise I destroy it... but then again I've spent a lot of money on the GTi... The Clio is a much better quality car and I'm thinkin of stripping my GTi out and using it as a track car, and buyin a 182 for the road.

To be honest, a standard GTi/VTS would have no chance of sticking to a 172 or 182... Clios have so much more torque. On the road the 0-60 would appear similiar, then the Clio would start pulling away quickly.

As for a standard GTi beating a VTS off the lights... what a load of rubbish!!! Same engine, same chassis, same car basically... same power, even the same gearbox! The VTS was clearly a VTR badged up as VTS!! (tip: with VTS, if it has a glovebox instead of an airbag, it's a VTR - I've owned both cars!)

I raced a GTI-6 the other day and my 172 was slightly quicker in a straight line than the Pug. Come on guys lets get real here...172's,206's,106's are all cheaply made, but fun hothatches. Please don't even start talking crap; A 172 is faster than a 106 because it has miles more power. The 106 may keep up until about 40-50. As for the 206 gti and the 172, it's a close run thing, but the 172 has the edge. Why do people try and claim they can beat the world in a 106! Go and get a proper car if you want to start boasting! It's a 106, it has 120bhp...deal with it or buy a 911. Here are the stats from http://www.letstorquebhp.com/fwd.asp?sort=ZeroTo60_Secs

PUG 106 GTI---0-60--8.14--60-100--15.67 (YAWN) CLIO 172 0-60---6.69---60-100 ---10.95 END OF DISCUSSION!!!

I own a 106 gti. its 139bhp. this does 0-60 in 7 sec. and goes off the clock at 140. theres a kit that delivers 180bhp without a turbo, from a company called LAD performance which I want and soon!!

Like a few have already said this will not make the car reach a higher speed... just make it stupidly fast for a n/a 1600!

Hi,

I own a 206 GTi and my son owns a 106 GTi. I have had 0-60 races with him, and top speed races with him. Also from 20-100, 30-70, many many times and the 106 always comes out on top. This car will blow your 172 anytime.

The 106 GTI isn't that quick, its 0-60 time is over 8 seconds, which aint bad, but compared to a 172 is slow at around 6.9. And top speed is 138 for 172, yours is around 128.

You 172 owners are so up your own bums. I have a VTS and 2 of my mates have got clio 172's we race all the time and theres no difference in performance, but my saxo handles much better plus I am getting a 106 GTi next which is the same car as a saxo VTS in nearly every way I've got to 60 in 7.1 seconds on many many occassion and 135 easy many many a time and that's with a tom tom. But 172's are good just a bit expensice plus its renault lol.

I don't care what any one says, I've done 172's all the time, and there isn't a second when I think I should of brought one of them instead. i had 145mph out of mine when my 106 gti was standard as I went past a clio 172 on the way to south end. all I've done now to my car is, forced induction kit, 4-2-1 manifold, de-cat, ported and polished thottle body, and my ecu has been chiped (which also re-sets my rev limiter to 7800) as well as adding at least 10bhp. next on the list is to lower it and cams. when my friend own my car (when it was standard) there was 3 people in the car in the wet and he could get 0-60 7seconds dead. there is a reason why the vts is 7.7 and the gti is 8.4 (as there are told) when the vts was timed, it had no fuel and one person in it, when the gti was done it had a fall tank, and two people, this was so it slowed it down, making the insurance group lower, look it up I'm right, how else would a gti be slower than a vts, its the same engine. And for those people that think its slower than a clio sport, and won't do 140mph, get in one, and with a drive that has bottle to take it off the clock. or just look on you tube.

You had 145mph out of your 106 GTi!!! I don't care what mods you done to your car, but you would NEVER get that out of the 1.6 engine!

I know as I have one, with some moderate mods and all it has done has made it faster to 60 abit, but not improved top-end speed.

I love how people state this and with all their mods, but no-one ever mentions changing the gearing or the box itself, as you can only go so far with the low gearing the 106 GTi has!!!

These kind of comments make the 106 GTi look silly, just respect it for what it is a great small hot-hatch, that is probably the closest thing to the greatest hot-hatch of them all--- the 205 GTi.

Please stop this 233km/h or 145 mph talk by 1.6 106 Gti.

A 406 V6 Peugeot will pass 145 mph.

Not 1.6 106 Gti.

HI I have a 106 gti, I have raced a few cars in my time and driven a few cars, in my opinion the fun I get from the 106 gti is second to none it feels faster than it is because its noisy and low down! and could definitley do with a bit more torque lower down this is where the difference shows when racing the likes of 17/182s, however I no which one id like to thrash around twisty b roads any day and it would be the 106. you don't buy one for top end or motorway driving. that's dull and boring and no fun to me I test drove a forfour brabus the other day changing the subject slightly that was a cracker!!!

Why would you get the throttle bodies ported and polished when that would make no difference, and forced induction is the like of turbo/supercharger, not a induction kit. 145mph. no way on earth. funny though!!!

A clio 172 only has 139.8 bhp at the wheels, my mate had his on a rolling road and its in the french car mag, its only about 164.5 at the flywheel. compaired to the 106 power to weight ratio the 172 isn't all that, yes there both fun little cars, so just think.

Don't be silly people here are some stats from parkers:

106 gti: 1587cc 120bhp 128mph 8.4- 0-60.

172 cup: 1998cc 172bhp 138 mph 6.7 0-60.

The pug maybe slightly faster than parkers say, but it is no way a match for a 172.
