Not being funny... But comparing a 1.6 Gti to a 172 2.0 is not fair...

The 172 why not Compare it to GTI6? lol Why cos theres no point!

The 106 GTI is awesome just no need to compare it to a 2.0!

Slap a GTI6 engine in the 106 and then compare lol.

Clio's are ugly too!!

The pug 106 GTI is genuinely a fun little car way more fun than I ever gave it credit for, two of my mates have owned one and 0-60 in just over 7 seconds with an induction kit and exhaust is a very real fact. Of course this depends on the driver, weather and temp and road surface a whole host of things, but just over 7 is about right even so I have been well over 130 in a 106 and that I was surprised about. Don't even get me started on the handling don't believe me check out a 90's top gear best handling cars and see what I mean get in one and believe.

'0-60 in just over 7 seconds with an induction kit and exhaust is a very real fact.'

Err Yeah, cos an induction kit and a straight through exhaust make such a difference...NOT. You'd be lucky to gain more than 5-6bhp. Don't be fooled just because the mods have made the car sound and breathe better.

If you consider both the price of the gti and insurance compared to the 172, and then look at the performance differences, I know which one I would rather buy. Plus gtis look better, and I just don't like Clios!!

Funny.

Can't really compare the 106 to the 172 as a package. The 172 is just a different car and faster at that.

Sure you can mod a 106.. But you can mod a 172 too, what's the point, they're both N/A and you'll never get a whole lot more out of the engines without spending a considerable amount.

They're very similar in corner speed, however the 172 is more refined (not a lot) and quick enough on the straights to open large gaps. Top end... Come on, 170hp vs 120hp.

I own a 172cup and have owned 2 saxos both vts, s and there is no way on gods green earth that the 106gti/saxovts would stand a chance!! don't get me wrong the gti and vts are fantastic little cars, but in the real world (not behind a keyboard) they are about 4/5 seconds slower to a ton at best they are cooper s pace! These are all great little cars, but sometimes I think people tend to dream a little!

I love all this talk. I own a 106 gti with all the toys ie. small mods. With a 75 shot of NOS over 3 seconds without nitrous I beat a 172 and 182, and stayed with a Type R, slipstreaming at 140mph.

Now the other day a gti6 got past me up a hill. It was my mate in by himself and it's stripped out. I had three in and I got past him at 135 on a straight.

I have a 106 gti and in standard form and modified the 106 puts the clios in the shade. as for performance the 106 gti produces 135 bhp per tonne, quite impressive! which makes this keep up with the clio all day and when it comes to the tight corners the clios would stand no chance.

As for top speed I had mine past 135mph everytime I try and one time I pushed it off the clock (which is 140 if you didn't know).

I've driven my sister's clio 172 and it don't feel any faster wat so ever, after driving that I'm glad I got a pug 106 and not a crappy clio.

Hi, i have a 106 Gti and I do like it quite a lot its very good for a 1.6 yes 1.6 the Clio 2.0 fuel eater and when you race people on the streets you car't really tell because it all depends on who puts there foot down first who breaks last so on. i have raced a 306 Gti-6,Clio 172,BMW 2.5,focus st they were all behind me down abit of a kinda street drag, but they could't get past me.that's not bad for a car that has 96 bhp at the wheels I reckon. you can pick Gti's up for about 3-4k wich is good for what it is (a french car)

Clio's v6's are sweet, but could do with a better 0-60 stats I bet a Clio 182 would be close to a v6.

Love this debate when it comes to racing on the road its all all about whos got bottle.

So with less than a second between them in 0-60 time with bottle and precise gear change why couldnt 106gti now and then get the upper hand? (all down to driver)

I really hate it when people talk about putting N0S on their car is that not just cheating? making up for poor perfromance driver and car?

I'm sticking with my Peugeot 205 1.9 gti lots of torque and weighs less than 106! clios and 106's bring it on!!!

HI all, I'm planning to buy a 106 GTI and I'm looking at a yellow one for sale. Can you buy a Peugeot 106 in yellow, as I want to know has it been re-sprayed or not... cheers.

If everyone looked at the actual performance times of the 172 and the 106gti you will see there is 0.3 seconds of a difference. the 172 does 0-60 in 6.9seconds where as the 106gti does it in 7.2seconds. now as you can see a couple of little mods on the 106gti will make it faster than the 172. I should know I hammered a subaru impreza wrz (non turbo) and that has the same performance timings as the 172. For the top speed the 106gti gets to a hundred and stops, only jokin, but it does take a while after a hundred. conclusion is that if in the 172 had a bad driver and the 106gti had a good driver then yes it would keep up with it.

I would just like to post my completely deluded opinion, along with many of the people here.

I have a Nova 1.0 Swing and its totally good. It will blow both a 106GTI and 172 off the road, cos I'm like, totally the best driver yeah...

Above poster, 0-60 of a non turbo impreza is about 9 sec. So congrats, you raced a slow car and won. Well done.

And please understand something guys, if you are both side by side and caning it, there has to be a substantial difference for one to noticeably pull away.

Listen to the people who have owned both, and stop repeating "I race my mates with 172 all the time yeah, and like, beat them."

It makes you look silly.

I thought the Peugeot 106 gti did 0-60 in 8.4 seconds. A Subaru Impreza non-turbo is very slow and nowhere near as quick as a 172. A 172 is in a totally different league than a 106 - it is closer to a Civic type R performance-wise.
