1989 Peugeot 205 GT from UK and Ireland - Comments

"A fair car that's quick, but slightly badly built"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Not a lot really except oil leaks, wheel bearings.

General comments?

The car is called a 205 GT, is this a 1.4 or a 1.6? Does anybody know.

The car does not seem to like hills, very steep gradients sees the basket that holds the spare wheel scrape on the ground. Smoke comes from the engine and it just doesn't seem to have the power to go (and its not my driving!)

The driving position is good, its comfortable and has a lot of power for a 1.4, or a 1.6?!?

The build quality is poor, and the ride is bad round town. The steering is pleasant in feeling. Another question, does anybody know whether A G'registration 205 Gt should have PAS, sometimes the steering is very light, but other times its very heavy (its could be the PAS is playing up)

The horn does not work.

The rear wiper has just failed.

Parts are very cheap and readily available at scrap yards.

The engine is noisy, but gear ratios are excellent.

All 205 GT's were fitted with the 1360cc 'XS' engine.

Also no 205 was fitted with PAS except Diesel and GTI models.

The GT is quite different to the XS. It does however, have the same engine (tu3s 1360). It has five doors and the trim on the doors is differtent I.E.: pattern. The front door is a lot shorter than the xs as it is five doors. The GT also has slightly different gear ratio's. They are slightly closer than the xs to make up for the extra 50kg produced by the doors. They are also much rare than the XS and are about the same to insure. However the GT does not look as sporty as the xs because of the five doors!

The GT has a totally different engine to XS it lies flat like a GTI engine and has twin weber carbs where as the XS lies straight up and down and only a single carb.

You're almost right, but at the same time completely wrong! The early xs had a twin carb weber set up and the later xs's !989 onwards, used a twin choke set up which gave the xs an extra 5 bhp. The same happened with the GT. And they did share exactly the same engine, trust me I owned both of them!
