1989 Peugeot 205 GTi review from UK and Ireland
"Best car ever, but expensive to keep on the road"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I bought the car and within the first two months I had to replace the rockercover gasket, Head-gasket nearside driveshaft, top radiator hose, heater hose, ignition module, 2 coils, plugs, leads, and there are a problem with the electric windows, the fuse always goes when the windows are down. It just cuts out at least once a day and no garage can find a fault. I have no idea whats wrong now.
And it burns a hell of a lot of oil.
General comments?
Although this car has been very expensive and troublesome, the 1.9 GTI is by far the best car ever made.
When the car is running right it will pretty much beat anything off the lights. And has to be one of the best handeling cars around.
Insurance was quite being only 19 with no no claims bonus, after numerous phone calls I got it for £1300 with Hastings direct.
The interior constantly rattels and things are always falling off (ash tray). There is absolutly no room in the back, but the front seats are the comfiest seats ever I can sit in it all day without getting a numb behind.
The exterior of the car is immaculate not a speck of rust anywhere and looks like new.
The 1.9 gti is by far one of the best cars ever built, and a soon to be classic. The 205 should be kept totaly standard on the outside, no big bumpers and neon crap.
By far the most expensive car I've had to run and keep on the road. My previus cars are metro GTA, 205xs, 306xsi, but none compare to the drive of the 1.9.
expensive but worth it.
