Right this car is very very quick for what it is. I push this car very hard on a daily basis hence a lot of problems with consumable parts.
The car will beat bigger engine cars up to about 70-90, but if you are racing round town then you will munch them, I raced a lotus Elise 1.8 and killed it and a 320 bmw and killed it! but to be honest this car becomes anoying. it's a bit like my girlfriend. one week everything will be going OK then the next everything will seem to go wrong!
My 205 is lowered 60mm on avo ajustibles and on GTI 1.9 alloys with pireli p6000's and it does handle well, but if you are proper takin a roundabout the backend does get a bit jiggy. other mods are straight through janspeed system with 4 inch backbox. its quick, but I am not making this up something has gone wrong on this car everyweek! I am not joking when I say this!
I don't think so how the hell could you beat a 1.8L Lotus Elise. it must have bin in top gear at about 20 mph and you must have bin in 1st. so you reckon a 1.4L 75 HP can beat a 120 HP lotus Elise which 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds and 1.4L 205 12.2. he musn't have been racing you.
If you acquired a car with 120000 on it and then do another 30000 of course it will go wrong!if you pay jack for it you will get a bad car. On the other hand you are exaggerating with the speed!
I will ignore your review and buy a decent 205 XS as they have the same engine as a Citroen Ax GT with half the insurance! :D.
I have had problems with my xs, but not every week and lets face it you could buy a car for 10 thousand and still have the same problems, mines done 120000 miles and it's a great runner, if you drive ya car hard and give little respect I'm sure the car will do exactly the same thing!

I have a peugeot 205 xs and I agree with your comments for the size of the engine they are rediculously fast. however beating a 320 bmw, no I don't think so a 1.6 yes, but not a 2 litre. also they arnt as troublesome as you say it must be a banger, I would advise anyone to buy one of these cause their cheap and are a laugh, great fun around town, top speed of 112mph book figure which is achievable easily, but all acceleration is lost at a ton.
I've had a 205 xs for about 3weeks.The car is great fun its fitted with a K+N filter straight through pipe its got the gti body kit and is fitted with a pair of bangin 15" :) Its the fastest car I've ever had at 112mph and is a proper eye catcher. But yeah I thrashed a Lotus and a BMW in the same day, and then I woke up!!!We all like to think we can beat them sorta cars, but in a 1.4 xs I don't think so. wiked car tho.
Just to clarify I also have 1.4 xs problems are occuring now even though I only have 60000 on the clock, but it has taken 4 months for any to occur, new clutch, cam belt the usual pricey problems. however would like to agree with the initial article and state that I also have taken out 2 litre beamers the lotus elise never raced one, at the end of the day it often comes down to who has the bol***ks really when racing on standard roads. the lotus maybe faster, but the matey writing the article maybe a nutter. (no offence)

I bought a 205 XS with 108 000 miles, and it hasn't caused me any problems in the last 15000.
Even if things do go wrong you can hardly complain with a 15 year old car, I drove new pugs all summer as a test driver and none could hold a candle to it for entertainment, and certainly not the fact that it cost me 400 quid.
By the way, the XS doesn't have 75 bhp, that's the engine from the other 1.4 205's, the XS has a twin choke carb that gives 85bhp, more if you fit a decent air filter - not a massive difference granted, but more than significant in a sub-900kg car.
Not a chance in hell of getting a Lotus Elise to race a 205 XS in the town either, why would they bother?
I had a 205 xs as my first car 2 years ago and the performance was amazing for what the car was (1.4 ltr) I managed to keep up with a friends cavalier sri every day going back from work on a wicked b road home it could'nt get away apart from the straight when it left me at about 80 - 90. I had problems towards the end with starter motor, drive shafts, water pipes,
brakes, but considering what I payed for it and how I drove it every day great car will be getting a gti next couple of months can't wait.
