"A cheap reliable 205 that you cannot fault"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

When I bought the car I had no problems the car on a whole felt well balanced. But after a month owning the car I heard a screaming noise coming from the front left of the car. I went to a specialist dealer to fix it and said that it was due to old age.

Then about 6 months later it started to miss fire. When I took it to the dealer he told me that my 1.8 Diesel 205 had a 1.9 Diesel 405 fuel pump and it was flooding the engine. When he fitted a 205 fuel pump I noticed a massive increase on performance and the engine makes a nice low 'grunt' noise when starting off at low revs.

General comments?

Well after blowing the head gasket on my old 205 D Turbo I would say that there is very little performance difference without a turbo.

It has many nice features such as Electric front windows, all round central locking, power steering, sun roof and working heater (As 205's have a reputatation for them failing).

I've noticed that the suspension on a standard diesel 205 is a lot softer and the car under steers severely.

It has a very bland instrument panel compared to the higher spec 205's which you have to deal with, as the speedometer likes to wiggle with old age.

I have a 205 diesel and I haven't had any problems with it what so ever the heater works it runs fine and has a solid body, i have noticed that the diesel 205's have a higher suspension to the 205 Gti which is great if you use it in the fields as I do. when going over a ramp in a Gti I always used to hit the sump, but the diesel never hits the sump and is cheaper to run. when I am old enough to pass my test in a few years I'm sure i'll have a 205 diesel.

The 205 turbo diesel is CONSIDERABLY quicker than the non turbo. The non turbo is a snail and takes for ever to get to 40mph that is why I didn't buy one and went for a TD much better and even more so with an intercooler.

Hi there,

Well if you are going to lay into my mistakes, why have you mentioned you opted for a 205 TD with an inter-cooler?...all Turbo Diesels have inter-coolers to work...!

Untrue - turbo diesels do not HAVE to have intercoolers to work. I have had a BMW 525 tds for a couple of years. This has 143 bhp. The TD version without the intercooler only has around 115 bhp I believe.

Correct, a car with a turbo doesn't have to have an intercooler. The intercooler doesn't make the car go any faster it just supplies cool air to the turbo. Without it you run the risk of turbo overheating and exploding... especially if you increase the boost pressure.

I have the Peugeot 205 GRDT 1769cc, It's a very quick car for a 17 year old like myself.

I was going to put an inter cooler on it off a Peugeot 405 TD, but its probably better just to drop a 405 engine in the 205, if it will fit.

BTW From what I've learnt an intercooler cools the air going into the turbo, not so it doesn't overheat and explode lol, it makes the air more denser so you get more power :)

Try to find a better modern equivalent than the 205 TD! You cannot!!!
