2004 Peugeot 206 S Tiptronic from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Don't buy one - You will only have problems"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Drivers seat rails have been replaced three times - Seat slide back and forth.

Terrible fuel consumption.

Steering wheel worn from 5 o' clock to 7 o'clock.

Gear selector stickers rubbed off.

Air vents collapsed internally.

Poor built quality.

Peugeot customer service and their manufacturers warranty is a farce, only equalled by the unbelievable bad service by my dealer.

General comments?

Cack build quality and usual Peugeot denial - Don't buy one.

Why did we buy another one of these cars after the problems we had with the first one???

The steering wheels outer coating had fallen off in the lower position, and the dealer tried to blame us, saying we had used something harmful, which had damaged the wheel - If we had the whole wheel would be falling apart!

The same excuse was said for the gear lever markings.

The outboard airvents were replaced under warranty two months earlier, as they had lost their friction, and now the inboard ones were going the same way, they both had fallen apart internally - We were accused by the dealer's service manager of damaging them internally - How can you get to the internal workings if they are behind the vent?

The major safety issue is the drivers seat - the dealer replaced the rails twice, and now the seat finally locks in place - however it does not tilt forward anymore since they fixed it, which is lousy for a 3 door car if someone wants to sit in the back.

The car has not done 32,000 miles, and when we took it in for the warranty work, the service man at the dealer said that none of this should have happened, and the warranty should not be an issue. He was over ruled by his service manager (a fat man with dandruff all over his shoulders) who came up with endless excuses and agreed to call the Peugeot UK rep to view the car - A complete waste of time as he stated that none of the items were covered in the warranty.

The dealership said the car would be delivered back to us by 1400 after the Peugeot rep (who we were not allowed to meet with or speak to) view the car - it took until 1630 for them to return the car and then their driver left it parked on a yellow line!

Peugeot UK were no help whatsoever, and I would advise that until they and their dealers buck up their ideas - NO ONE SHOULD BUY THESE CARS.

We are buying a new Vauxhall diesel Corsa - Nice!

It sounds like all of the usual list of excuses from Peugeot and their dealerships. The cars are built to a shockingly low standard, ie bits rub off, fall off or simply break!

Your best situation is to keep on a Peugeot UK as they have HAVE to honour the warranty - if not sue them and stick to your guns no matter what they try to fob you off with.

Good luck and don't buy another French car - they all are unreliable and fall apart!!!

Update 21.8.07: Peugeot UK now will no longer speak to us as we pointed out that the build quality of the car was poor and that they are responsable for the warranty of poorly made items that they supply.

We are now going to seek legal action for the work to be carried out.

If Peugeot UK think that it is only one bad car they must be deluded - OR are they afraid to admit the 206 is a craply built heap that with a bit of luck will crawl it's way past it's three year warrany peroid and then it is no longer their concern!

If you buy one - beware!

We have chopped the Peugeot heap in for a brand new Citroen C1 as it was £3000 cheaper than the Corsa - Lets see if the other side of the Peugeot / Citroen company are any better (we hope so!).

Good Choice on the Citroen. OK they can have their problems, but I am a Citroen fan. My brother on the other had isn't. The last 3 Citroen he owned have had nothing but problems.

But the C1 seems a solidly-built car. I have a C3 Exclusive and it has never let me down.

I asked the service manager what car would he own personally. He said id pick a C1 over a C6. So it must be a good car.

I'm surprised by Peugeot.

The C1 has been running superbly for three months now and returns 43mpg around town - 24 mpg than the 206, road tax £35 instead of £140.

A more basic built cars but light years ahead on build quality - we can only assume that as these cars are built on the production line along with the 107 and the Toyota Aygo then the Japanese will not want to be linked to Peugeots reputation for building poor quality cars so the standard of all the cars has to be good.
