1981 Peugeot 305 SR Estate review from UK and Ireland
"Better car then most competitors... but far too expensive to run, and in the end proved unreliable."
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Rear radius arm bearings failed due to water ingress into the taper roller bearings through inadequate seals, fixed on later cars (identifiable by having 4 bolts per road wheel).
Engine overheated from new.
Cylinder head gasket failed twice.
Access to ignition distributer is very difficult.
Starter motor solenoid failed.
Engine eats spark plugs.
Serious tailgate rust, fixed on later cars by redesign.
General comments?
Very good bodyshell assembly and paintwork quality.
Excellent transmission, though there is some gear whine.
Engine is at best, adequate for the job.
Cabin is very good in terms of design, materials and accessibility.
Grossly excessive prices charged for genuine OEM parts.
