1. Heater fan stays on in the off position.
2. Front mud flaps drag on tyre when turning sharply/full lock.
3. Doors not shutting properly, causing the door trim to become unclipped.
4. Notchy gearbox, especially from cold, OK when warmed up.
5. Rev counter constantly bouncing between 900 rpm and 2000 rpm.
- Take 1: Dealer said nothing was wrong with the idling.
- Take 2: Dealer put it on computer diagnostics, still claimed nothing was wrong. Charged me for the pleasure.
- Take 3: Dealer replaced the stepper motor linked to the engine idle module. Still idling erratically.
- Take 4: Dealer changed complete throttle module, and collapsed air pipe. 350 quid covered by warranty, 60 quid my bill = CAR IDLING FINE!
6. Backlight to clock/outside temperature gauge blew. Replaced, no cost.
7. Rattling driver door window mechanism.
8. Catalytic converter went, replaced under warranty (thank goodness!)
9. Rattling eaxhaust bafflers, still trying to get sorted.
10. Sometimes the rain-sensor windscreen wipers go into a world of their own after going through a heavy shower, and seem insistent on wanting to run at full speed even though no water is on the screen!
11. Drivers seat moves around a little, and needs a strong jolt to clip into the correct notches.
When it is running well, it really goes well! When it is playing up, it is one of the most frustrating cars to own.
Turning circle is absolutely appalling, making driving round some multi-story car parks almost impossible.
Always turns heads, especially with the quad headling conversion.
Great fun through country roads, not much fun in a traffic jam on the M1, as the clutch is less than forgiving to ankle muscles.
Fuel economy is not for the faint hearted, and you'll need to keep a credit card handy just in case you run out half an hour after filling up!!
I made the Gti-6 entry titled 'A fun car to drive if your not too fussed about solid build'.
Amazing to see so many in-common faults with your GTi and that you drove a turbo diesel Rover 400 previously as well!
I miss the Rover - it was well built inside. The 306 drivers seat is moving about now as well and everything creaking. Still great to cane the car though.
I'm in Australia, bought a GTI-6 in 1999. Would never buy another Peugeot again. I love the car, but the quality is appalling.
Where to start???
Clutch replaced at 2000kms.
Bonnet re-sprayed - poor paint.
Fuel pump seized at 20000kms.
Driver's window controller arm broke - cheap bit of plastic - $300.
Cat converter making a loud knocking noise in heavy rain to this day.
Crack in the chassis.
Erratic rain sensor.
Air bag recall, and it goes on...
I have to report the same story. I bought my 98 GTI-6 back in Feb 01. I have had it in for the airbag light twice (it still comes on now, but can be fixed simply by moving the passenger seat... until the next time someone sits in it!), the dealership said I needed a new injector when the car was misfiring, did not fix the problem.
I started to lose water, the dealer said there was no problem, resulting in the head gasket blowing and the dealership trying to convince me that I needed a whole new engine at £3,500!!! I transported the car to a local garage, had everything sorted including a full head rebuild for £850. Strangely enough I have not taken my Pug anywhere near another Pug dealer since!
The car has seemed fine since, although it is now starting to have the eractic idling problems mentioned above, and I have no warranty!!!
I love driving the car, but I'm fed up with the problems and the expense. I've only had it nearly a year now and I'm starting to look at importing a brand new S3. I want something with good build quality that can also give me a big grin like the GTI. Hopefully being brand new, I won't have any problems, but even so at least I will have a warranty.

If your having idling problems then it's probably the lambda sensor. it only costs about 130 quid to get sorted. it's the only problem I've had with my gti-6 and since I got it fixed my cars ben runnin sweet.
