2000 Peugeot 306 GTi-6 review from UK and Ireland
"The last of the"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Air bag warning light came on a couple of times, but dealer insists all is well
Stepper motor failed causing idling and starting problems
Starting to use a bit of oil.
Interior trim is looking sorry for itself.
General comments?
Still handles and steers like no other front driver I've experienced. Can be steered on the throttle at will, and the 167 brake engine and close ratio 6 speed box gives storming performance.
Reliability is okay, dealers dire, and build quality not the best. That said, I don't believe another hot hatch exists which can offer such thrills on a twisty road. I even prefer it to my old 205 GTi 1.9.
I recently drove a 307 XSi and it's apparent Peugeot have abandoned their fun car roots. Even allowing for the difference in power, the handling is not in the same league, and the car has a rubbery, spongy feel that wouldn't be out of place in a Vauxhall! It's also like driving a van! Maybe I'll keep the 306 for a while yet, although it is starting to feel a bit tired. Still love it though.
