You obviously were unlucky and got a bad one... We've got three turbo diesel 306's in our family and they're very reliable and cheap to run. It's not fair to slag off all 306's because of one bad one.
Sounds like it may have been a rebuilt write off to me. Unlucky, not true for most 306's they are a great car :)
3 head gaskets?
Burning oil?
Sounds like its been thrashed to me!

I have a 306DT and since I have had it the engine mounts collapsed, the roof around the sunroof has started to rot, the alarm started to go off for no reason and now the doors won't lock using the remote key. BUT I STILL LOVE HER!!!
I've had my 306DT for nearly 4 years now & have so far (touch wood!) not had any problems with it. Cheap to run, easy to drive, reliable and nippy for a Diesel!
I bought a 306 d turbo and it is a perfect example of a mark 1 in black she really drives well and for little cash. your car was obviously treated badly and not serviced properly if at all! I take care of my pug as long as that happens you'll have no problems.

I've had a 1994 306 Dturbo for 2 years now and I havnt had a singe problem with it yet and I'm never far away from the redline if not on it! these are superb little cars as long as you service them often! also if any1 fancies a bit more poke from your turbo look for the bell shaped housing attached to the turbo and bend it slightly, the more you bend the more poke you get!! carefull tho too much and you'll blow your head gasket!
