2003 Peugeot 307 Rapier from UK and Ireland - Comments

"The car looks and feels great, but if it don't work there ain't no point!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Rev counter rapidly dropping to zero and returning to current rev count - sometimes with/without warning panel indication and 'Brake System Failure'

Ergonomic 'feel' of indicator arm changed and indicator no longer self cancels - this also sometimes switches full beam on/off intermittently.

General comments?

I find it extremely hard to believe the poor level of service I received from my dealer. When I took my BRAND NEW 307 back after 3 days with the rev indication problem listed above. My car would not be looked at for ten days and I would not get a courtesy car until OCTOBER!!!.

I managed to get the car booked in after 6 days and did, eventually, get a courtesy car. The problem was cleared (note: they didn't actually say fixed, but they cleared the error from the computer) but the very next day the indicator arm broke causing no end of problems with lights coming on full beam and irritating me and many oncoming drivers.

Having phoned the dealer again I was promised a return call to arrange a time for it to be fixed. Guess what? No phone call. I decided to go to the garage anyway and give them the car back to be fixed. After initially being dealt with I insisted on speaking to the Sales Manager who didn't appear for nearly 30 minutes. After venting my spleen he totally 'sympathised' with me, however I was never actually given an apology for first the poor reliability of the car or the poor service from the garage. Not only that, they made out they were doing me a big favour by finding me, again, a courtesy car!!!

Do these people not realise that their very existence as an on going concern depends on satisfying their customers? I expect a garage to bend over backwards if I return with a faulty NEW CAR. I should be getting £12,000 worth of attention and at least an apology from Peugeot if not the garage.

A very poor start to a possible long relationship with Peugeot. The car looks and feels great, but if it don't work there ain't no point!

Sounds par for the course to me. I am on my 3rd stalk and to get it done I had to write a 3 page snotty letter to the dealer (not the same one as you) who suddenly managed to find that "the part arrived yesterday". They never call when they say they will, even to let you know when the car is ready for you to collect, they can never look at the car for a minimum of 3 weeks no matter what the fault, the look at you like your stupid if you ask is you can have a courtesy car when you finally get it booked in and say that means it will be 2 months etc etc.

I too had "the computer fault" causing the dash problem, windows to go up and down etc. I was told that the computer needed to be updated to the latest software. 3 weeks later I got the car back after they had immobilised the car, damaged the computer and had to order a new one.

All I can say is lucky my 307 Rapier is a company car because I would have totally lost it by now with them if I had spent my hard earned cash on it.

Its not that it a bad car - I enjoy driving it and think its comfortable with good features, its just that your expected to suffer niggling faults and the dealers attitude is so poor.

Ps I think my car is pretty much OK now (touch wood) mind you I had to tuck the footwell carpet back behind the trim this morning (another common niggle)!!!

These problems usually occurs if you drove the car into floods which made those faults. Like my 307 Auto which I drove into a flood and after 3-4 days the gearbox didn't respond and forced to use 2nd gear in the tiptronic system.

I had the problem of the rev counter going back to zero... Peugeot said it was the alternator over charging and that it was a known fault, ask them to check the charging system.

I bought a secondhand 307 HDI 90 Rapier in silver with 8000 miles on in March 2003.

After 1000 miles the High pressure fuel pump went and was off the road for 10 days at a cost of £1530 (paid for by warranty) this involved removing the fuel tank and replacing all fuel lines and injectors.

The indicator stalk has been replaced and 2 downloads added to the on board computer.

The car itself is a good drive in my opinion and the 3rd gear a delight, however the build quality is not up to the standards of the 306, the problem of the carpet coming away in the footwell is cured by dealers using clips, had mine done and no problems since.

The channel storage on the radio is amusing, but infuriating at the same time, mine has a liking for Radio 2!! this is after storing channels and then changing channels using the thumb wheel.

On reflection the car is a good looker, a decent performer, roomy inside, but when my warranty is up next October I will change the car, probably for Audi A3 tdi 1.9 (used)

Peugeot 307 1.4 Rapier March 2003. We have had alarming problems with the revs being unstable. With clutch depressed the revs vary randomly from 800-2000 rpm, typically when stopped or braking. Driving at slow speed in traffic the car will actually speed up and slow down slightly all by it's self (it's not an automatic!).

After 6 visits to the garage, various engine and computer parts replaced, several downloads of software, they seem no further on in rectifying the fault. Has anyone else got this problem? Has anyone tried getting compensation out of the garage or Peugeot UK?

Hi, i have had a peugeot 307 1.6auto from new since december. When I slow down or stop, the car seems to go into high revs or high gear and jumps forward quite violently, and no amount of braking stops it and I have had to use the hand brake. Am going back to my dealer tomorrow and see what they have to say. According to other web sites peugeot know about this fault,so why are they still selling these cars?

I am now on my 7th indicator stalk (comm 2000) in two years. It now, when indicating right, correctly cancels and then indicates left all on its own. My dealer is now refusing to replace again. Haven't paid for any yet and don't intend to now. Awaiting reply from Peugeot. All the electrics die at least once a month. Rear demister turns itself on all the time. Probs with the carpet. Also the rear offside door handle keeps on breaking. just a plastic lug that gives up. My dealers advice was to wedge a matchstick in... I asked for one, guess what, they had to order one!!!

It's a great car to drive, but it is a total pain in the ass!!!

We bought our 2003 307 HDI rapier 110 in April and immediately had problems with the rear passenger door handle not opening (convenient when you have a baby in the car) which thankfully was repaired quite quickly by Campions. We took the car back again soon after though as whenever setting off in first gear the accelerator would give a little beep, the problem could not be located, but we were to keep an eye on it. The car seemed to lose power a couple of times in traffic which is quite alarming and the indicators also turn on full beam frequently when used. recently in the dark I flashed a car to let it go and my full beam stayed on without my realising it. Needless to say someone "kindly" beeped to let me know. It is a great car, but unfortunately these things are making me think the car is not as reliable as it should be for the price and thus we are considering changing it for something else.

I too have had numerous problems with my Peugeot 307 (1.6 Rapier).Don't get me wrong it looks great and drives well, but I've had so many problems in the 2 years I have had it.

From indicator problems not cancelling to engine management lights coming on and off at random intervals, the front lamps are a nightmare to change once a month when they blow.

I still enjoy driving my 307 but these constant niggles are starting to take their toll. If I didn't have a friend that worked for Peugeot I would have completely lost my rag with it by now (and I have only 49000 miles on the clock!)

I feel as if I'm not alone here and may be repeating others, but wanted to express my opinion... If you are looking for a 3/5 door hatch... buy a Golf!
