2003 Peugeot 307 SW from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Extremely poor mechanical/build quality"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

3 clutch fly wheels.

Front suspension bushes (twice)

Front suspension arms.

Rear wheel bearings.

Wish bones.

To name, but a few.

General comments?

Whilst the layout of the car is very versatile, it just goes from one fault to another!

Have emailed Peugeot about these issues to no avail.

Have now traded the car in and told Peugeot so!

Received this reply:

"As we have explained our position, and have nothing further to add, we now

view this matter as closed. We therefore will not be entering into any

further correspondence with you, however, I trust have no further reason to

contact us."

Charming don't you think!

Before selling the car, you should have taken your case to one of the major car magazines. It only seems to be the threat of negative publicity that actually makes some car manufacturers care about their customer's experiences. That said, Peugeot are particularly dreadful. I sold my 307 because it was less reliable than the £200 Vauxhall Cavalier I bought as a stopgap before I ordered it, and which got me to and from work when the 307's can-bus electrics had gone on strike for the umpteenth time and the car wouldn't start.

Five breakdowns and eleven dealer visits in 8 months is apparently wholly acceptable for a modern Peugeot, according to the similar dismissal I received from Peugeot's so-called "Customer Services" (I cannot believe this description is allowed under the Trades Descriptions Act). It's also apparent that having to keep a £200 banger on standby to get you to work when the £16k spanking new car on the drive can't, is also fully acceptable. I just wish they were honest and advertised this "feature" in the glossy brochure. Clearly, unreliability has become a desirable attribute for Peugeot.

At the end of the day, Peugeots are basically tacky French crap despite this new-found illusion of quality (that takes about 10,000 miles to wear off completely). The only thing more shoddy and disappointing than my Peugeot 307 was the attitude of Peugeot themselves. All we can do is vote with our feet and tell them why we're doing it. Their market share has fallen in recent years and that will be what finally wakes them up.
