"8v GTi great, find a 16v"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Bottom end not very strong - blown twice.

Syncro in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears.

Exhaust manifold crack.

General comments?

Great handling, even better when lowered, oversteer easy to control.

16v engine accelerates much better from 1st gear to 2nd uphill compared with the 8v GTi.

Could do with another gear on motorways.

I have a 309 SRi and this is a VERY accurate review!! I have also gone through 2 bottom ends and want a 6 speed box just for the motorway. I am going to replace my 1.6 engine for a 1.9, but I don't know how easily a Mi16 will go in and what extra stuff, apart from ECU I would need?!?!??

I have a phase 1 309 gti in red what a car for the money I have the biggest smile on my face blagging down windy country roads, superb handling just a shame some of the horses have bolted from the stables. I am now looking for a 2litre turbo from a 406 as this will slot straight in with no hassles unlike the mi16,looking at 200-220 bhp with the correct tunning etc.

The mi16 is a good engine but has been known for oil starvation under heavy cornering, you can also buy an adapter for your dizzy so as to use the same ecu and wiring loom, if more torque is required you can fit a diesel gearbox, or if confident take fifth from diesel box and fit to your be1 or be3,if upgrading the sri to a 1.9 for insurance purposes you may have to upgrade your brakes?not to sure on that 1. I have spent a lot of time and to much money the missus says on this car but I won't get rid lol if you need to email me on any questions on your pugs if I can help I will also no of two breakers who just do 205 and 309s if yours struggling for parts email:puggy309@hotmail.co.uk

happy driving.
