1988 Peugeot 405 Mi16x4 review from UK and Ireland
"All the benefits of a family saloon with sports car destroying performance"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Due to it being a four wheel drive beast the clutch was very expensive to get replaced.
Water Pump went.
Engine is is not running good due to what I think is a problem with the engine management system.
Sun roof doesn't open (has been like that since I bought it).
Some of the electrics didn't work due to loose connections, but they were easy to sort out.
General comments?
I love this care to bits. As with all specialist and performance vehicles, the Mi16x4 can be expensive when it wants to be with a large part of repair costs coming down to your mechanics labour charge. Specialist tools and the fact that it is a rare car can cause your local garage to treat you like the customer from hell and the only alternative is to go to Peugeot themselves where they will charge even more money.
If you can pay to keep it well maintained though this car provides and excellent mix of commuting comfort and sports car performance. For your day to day driving keeping her bellow 4000 RPM she can be as economical as your standard two litre Vauxhall, but once you hit the 40 mark on your rev counter you had better hold on.
She red lines at 7000 RPM giving you a health power band to play with. When overtaking someone you can just keep the hammer down as the 160 BHP rockets you past any obstruction and if you're not overtaking anyone just keep an eye on your speed, you'll crack a ton before you blink.
The 405 was an amazing chassis and great handling was a hall mark throughout the 405 range. The Mi16x4 gives you the power to make the most of such a stable shell. All this as well as the 4 wheel drive makes the 405 Mi16x4 a brutal tool for the die hard drivers out there.
