1990 Peugeot 405 Mi-16x4 review from UK and Ireland
"Can't afford a sierra cosworth... Who cares!!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Cooling fan doesn't cut in. No-one can seem to find the problem so I run power myself with a switch on the dash.
Heated seats don't heat. Can't be bothered to fix.
Remote locking opened and closed all doors, but the drivers door, great for passengers not so great for me.
No rust to be found on the car, but the rear spoiler has changed from silver to a sort of faded whitish color.
It cut out on me (in the middle of overtaking a 306 s16) and refused to restart until I spent about £180 on the ignition system (can't remember what they said was wrong with it)
Then most recently the timing belt snapped 11k miles early (not due to be changed until 145k) even though it was changed when it was last due at 90k miles (it has full Peugeot service history) doing god knows what damage to the engine, it's being repaired now at some outrageous price.
General comments?
I'm still trying to decide if this car is worth all I'm spending on it, but I know I'm only thinking this because I'm not driving it at the moment. I know that when it's repaired I'll get into that very nice leather seat, start the engine and fall in love with it all over again just as I did after having the ignition sorted out.
This x4 is the second Mi16 I've had, the first one was a 2 wheel drive version.
The x4 doesn't really set the world on fire with all out speed, but you throw it into a corner and wet or dry it just goes where ever you point it... Some times I feel the 160bhp isn't enough, but I think that's down to power loss through the 4x4 because my 2 wheel drive car was an animal.
The other problem I find with the x4 is seeing as not many people bought them in this country, not many people bothered with performance parts, my car has an exhaust that looks like a pea shooter and there is only 1 company I can find that does a non standard system, but on the upside it has possibly the cheapest suspension to get lowered!!
