"Heavy, slow, gawky, don`t buy it unless you love it"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Many carb problems.

Engine head is very sensetive to heat, It melted twice.

After all the abuse the engine has passed it`s block finally blew, and I sold it to a mechanic for very cheap.

There were also many problems that I can`t remember, it`s unreliable.

General comments?

The car interior was in good shape, and well kept.

The car is very slow, not just it`s 1.6, it`s also very heavy.

The fuel consumption is high, althaoght it`s only 1.6

The only good thing I can say that it is simple to fix and it has a strong body.

My 405 peugeot is a very good car. It has a 9 liter/100km urban consumption. It's a very good car. Maybe because it has only 49.000 km.

My 405gl is a 1.9. I've not driven it yet so I can't comment on it. but on the face of it most of the peugeot 1.9 engines like thoes used in the 1.9 gti. are very strong as long as you keep up with the basics. like air, oil/oil filter and fuel filter. and you don't cain the living hell out of it. and as my last car was a peugeot 306 1.6 and it had done 220k miles before it died I would say as long as its quiet and smoke free and has no sludge in the engine or radiator it should last you a long time.

My Peugeot 405 SR is a 1.6 manual and it is definitely not slow, it can over take many different 1.8s and even a 2.0 TD. The car is a very comfortable drive and with all of its extras, it puts the car ahead of its time.

The reason of bad performance of Peugeot 405 is Israel is warm climate, 33 C or more in average. This causes low air density, cooling problems and need in air conditioner. While 1.6l models are described as powerful in colder countries, it is not enough in Israel. In contrast, cars with 1.6l engine with 16 valves like Mazda or Hyundai perform well. This is caused by better cylinder filling at medium to high RPM.

I have driven 1.6 carb, 1.9 carb, and 1.8i versions in 40+ Celsius, and the 1.6 was quite good. The other two were better, but even the 1.6 was better than many other cars. That said, a bad carb will cause overheating, blown head,...
