2000 Peugeot 406 LX Estate review from UK and Ireland

"A good car let down by poor performance"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing has really gone wrong with it.

General comments?

Well a good car let down by it's performance.

It's sluggish. when fully loaded and with the A/C on forget about racing anyone. It Struggles to beat a 1.2L Corsa off the lights. the 90 Bhp Engine is OK when it get's going, but getting going is the problem. 0-62 mph in 14.8 seconds and a top speed of 107 mph. when fully loaded and with the A/C on about 0-62 in 16 seconds and a max speed of about 98 mph. A slow engine for this kind of car.

90 Bhp at 4000 rpm, once it hits 4000 rpm it starts to come alive and over taking requires at least 3200 rpm. The Engine has to be thrashed hard to get anywhere with it.

If your going to get a HDI get the 110 bhp or the 2.2L 136 BHP versions.

It's quiet on the motorways, but be prepaired to have a good gap for overtaking. Not fast enough for the fast lane.

My Wife has a 1.6L 16V Renault Scenic and it's at least 3.5 seconds quicker to 60 mph.

On the plus side it is Economical it will do about 44 mpg on the Motorways. I can get about 600 Miles off a full tank. not bad pulling power, but pays for it on the performance side of it.

It has a good level of equipment for an LX model. A/C CD Player with 4 speakers rain sensitive windscreen wipers. wood type trim.

The dealer where I live is very good they explain things well and service my car quickly. can't really fault them.

You can do about 28 mph in 1st, 50 mph in second,73 mph in 3rd, 100 in 4th and 107 in 5th. I've had 101 mph out of it on the autobahn. and I was getting overtakin by 1.4l Meganes and 1.6l 307's. I was flat out then. that was with a boot full of things

with no A/C on though. so overall a good car let down by this poor slow engine. stick to higher bhp models.
