1997 Peugeot 406 LX review from UK and Ireland
"Smooth, economical and reliable drive"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Other than the odd replacement bulb, nothing much.
Turbo-connection pipe came loose resulting in awful performance as the turbo was not kicking in. But was a quick and cheap fix.
Brake pipe corrosion at last MOT, (probably due to salt on roads), is the only major repair needed.
General comments?
There are a lot of complaints about the 1.9 Diesel being a bit gutless. Whilst it is not the quickest off the mark, I still find the performance very good and am not afraid to overtake on single-lane roads.
Fantastic motorway cruiser and very very comfortable. Great drive and very fluid handling - only niggle is the gear change can sometimes be a bit stiff and awkward.
Fuel economy is great for such a large car - always at least 45mpg and can sometimes get 50.
Servicing and repairs are reasonable in price - though I've always gone to an Independent garage and never to a Peugeot dealership.
