2000 Peugeot 406 GLX review from UK and Ireland

"Good looking car, could do with better build quality"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Gearbox mount deteriorated resulting in the gear linkage failure at 215000 miles.

Clutch burnt out due to having to pull away in a high gear.

Endless number of oil leaks.

Alternator died at 215000 miles resulting in break down assistance.

De-mister unit failed thus making driving difficult in bad weather. Problem was bad electrics.

General comments?

In general, the HDI engine has always been a good starter. There is no need for glow plugs, as the engine fitted on this particular car has direct injection.

The HDI engine produces about 110bhp, which is comparable too many petrol units of the same size. The torque is excellent low down and will easily pull at 1000rpm in top gear with little fuss. When the engine starts to spin at 3000rpm and above, it takes off like a rocket and hurtles you to speeds fast enough to get you into trouble.

The engine sounds and performs like you would have many people believing that it is a petrol and not a diesel.

As for fuel economy, I average about 38mpg around town with sensible driving. I have no need to thrash things.

The car corners good and is forgiving. I have not managed to screech the tires when cornering as I often did with the Mondeo.

The interior is comfortable and looks classy.

Boot space is huge and fits most items with ease,

such as a wheel chair, suite cases, push chair and heavy shopping.

The all-round electric windows are useful and convenient.

The general build quality does need improving I think. The doors sound cheap when you close them (you get a clang rather than a clunk).

The general appearance of the car does look attractive. I love the look of the 406 and prefer it, opposed to the new 407. I have reasons to believe the 406 was designed by Pinin Frina, just as the 205 was.
