1991 Plymouth Acclaim No Designation review from North America
"Still going strong.."
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Radiator leaks coolant.
There is a small engine crack that burns oil.
Timing Chain and Water Pump failed at 153,000 miles.
Shift Cable snapped at 158,000 miles.
Complete brake system (drums + rotors) replaced at 162,000 miles.
General comments?
The Plymouth Acclaim surprised me with it's overall reliability. Despite the occasional larger repair, this car always starts and always runs strong.
The V6 3.1L engine with 4 speed overdrive transmission is the perfect combination for this car. It has not given me any trouble. It outperforms
any of the 4 cylinder engines combined with a 3-speed transmission.
This car is not the most stylish car by any means. It is indeed boxy and somewhat stodgy, but provides reliable
transportation that can't be beat.
The dash controls are easy to use. The only complaint I would have is that they are a good reach from the driver's seat. One can easily get a sore arm from the reach.
The standard gray interior has held up well. The front bucket seats are pretty uncomfortable for long trips, but this makes for extended leg-room in the front.
Overall, the '91 Acclaim is a good buy if you can find one. If you do find one, opt for the 4 speed transmission and V6 engine. You will be glad you did.
