The Plymouth Acclaim surprised me with it's overall reliability. Despite the occasional larger repair, this car always starts and always runs strong.
The V6 3.1L engine with 4 speed overdrive transmission is the perfect combination for this car. It has not given me any trouble. It outperforms
any of the 4 cylinder engines combined with a 3-speed transmission.
This car is not the most stylish car by any means. It is indeed boxy and somewhat stodgy, but provides reliable
transportation that can't be beat.
The dash controls are easy to use. The only complaint I would have is that they are a good reach from the driver's seat. One can easily get a sore arm from the reach.
The standard gray interior has held up well. The front bucket seats are pretty uncomfortable for long trips, but this makes for extended leg-room in the front.
Overall, the '91 Acclaim is a good buy if you can find one. If you do find one, opt for the 4 speed transmission and V6 engine. You will be glad you did.
I agree, the Acclaim is a good car. I have a 1991 4 cylinder 2.5 liter Acclaim, and it is a really good car. The only problem with mine is that it idles a little rough, and starts pretty hard. Although the Acclaim may have some problems here and there, I agree that the Acclaim is an overall good vehicle.
I am a car buff, have owned a '92 Acclaim as well as a '90 Sundance, both with the 2.5L 4cyl. and 3-spd auto., and can tell you without a doubt that the V6 and 4-speed are not worth the perfomance advantages. The reliability is terrible in comparison. You'll be lucky if the transmission lasts 100k miles and the V6 is far more problematic than the 2.5L 4cyl. The same V6 was also used in the '89-'98 Hyundai Sonata, if that tells you anything right there. If you can accept the sluggish acceleration from the 4cyl. engine and 3-spd auto, definitely go with that powertrain. Far more reliable and cheaper to maintain.
