"A financial disaster for my family"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Everything.

Electronics are constant problem. BCD replaced twice.

Transmission was replaced when it shoved a spring pin through side of the transmission housing (at 45,000 miles). I have read that transmission failure is common for Chrysler.

Wipers stopped working.

Battery went dead intermittently.

Struts went bad.

Brakes feel unsteady.

Dealer support and manufacturer support was soooooooo bad.

General comments?

I have read that Chrysler adopted a long warranty in panic mode when their transmissions kept failing. They dropped the long warranty but have not fixed the transmissions.

I have had so many problems with my 1996 Grand Voyager it would be impossible to list them all. Worse yet, I was stupid enough to lease it for FIVE years and I am stuck with it until it is done. I am praying since it is out of warranty that nothing else major occurs. I have had the transmission replaced TWICE, the wipers are possessed, the power locks on the sliding doors keep seizing up (six times at least). And that is just off the top of my head. I wouldn't take one for free, and I have also been praying it would spontaneously combust. But other than that it's OK.

I have to concur. We had the same problem with the transmission, along with replacing the AC, as well as the brakes. The bigger problem is the lack of service & follow-up with Chrysler/Plymouth Inc / service department. Will not repeat the mistake of purchasing this brand again...

You are so right. Chrysler makes nice looking vehicles, and the style and function of the van was a selling point. I only wish that I would have remembered how much I hated Chrysler products before I bought it. But love is blind.

Misery loves company. I purchased my '99 seven months ago with 30K miles. I'm now at 39K. Over the weekend the transmission died, the speedo stopped working, and of course, the "Check Engine" light came on. This all happened in a matter of 3 minutes. The van is currently at the shop and I'm waiting for the prognosis. Thank God I bought the extended warranty.

Second time is not a charm. We purchase a used 96 Grand Voyager, and like the first one the transmission has failed, (third gear clutch sheared off), the AC needs a new condenser and compressor. The locks are a problem, the radio like the last one failed! Just about everything the first Van 1991 had go wrong is repeating, except the paint has stayed on this one. We even had a protracted argument over the extended warranty since the problems started while under warranty and the deal kept giving it back saying it was fixed when it wasn't. Meanwhile the warranty expired and the dealer said the best the Chrysler rep would do was to split the cost.

Never, every buy this van without the gold warranty, that is only if you like siting around in dealer service lounges while your car is getting fixed, and when the time or mileage gets to the point where the warranty is going to expire, SELL IT!!

Transmission problem with our '98 Grand Voyager. It blew up while we were on vacation a few weeks ago, at 45,000 miles. Cost to fix -- $2,800 plus over $600 for a rental van for one week, and another 650 mile round trip to pick it up. Does anyone have any information on a website that may list manufacturing problems, etc.? So far our dealer has been no help, and we are going to Chrysler after that. As it is out of warranty, we expect nothing, but will die trying. The repair people said they would stand by us, the shop who supplied the rebuilt transmission said they keep a big supply because they go through a lot. This shouldn't have happened, and Chrysler should make good on it, regardless of the out-of-warranty status. Sounds like they've known about this problem all along.

My 96 Grand Voyager has blown the transmission at 60K. My last car lasted 40 years! Chrysler tells me there is no recall yet admits that they have had many complaints about the transmission in this year vehicle. I now am walking, wish I had my 40 year old car back! Won't ever recommend a Chrysler product to anyone, especially since you get nothing for the amount of money you are spending!

We also have a 96 grand voyager and these comments seem like deja vu all over again. The tranny went out at about 65,000, not sure about the details. The trim has been a disaster. All kinds of whirs and whizzes come out of the front end and the dealer claims he can't hear them.

96 Gand Voyager SE, wipers possessed, fan blower only works on high, and I'm trying to find a resistor pack - suspected problem but where?

On the Hayes schematic it shows it floating in space. Knock on wood about the transmission - though I'm only at 60000...

Wow! 1996 Grand Voyager should be recalled. I've had the PCM replaced for a total of $600, now the battery cable is bad and you have to have whole battery harness replaced - $900! I have 57K miles.

My wipers are possessed too, they go on and off at will, the tape deck gave out even though used occasionally. door seals are falling off.

Noisy inside.

Replaced the brakes twice, need it again.

Transmission was worked on twice. And it was only the two of us, no kids, now it's just me! Not even used for many long trips. Paid off 6 months ago, bought brand new!

Gonna fix it up, trade it in, and go back to buying imports like Honda or Toyota. Oh yeah, and it squeaks at every turn.

I'm really disappointed and discouraged, especially at price we pay for cars now, you'd think they'd have more integrity!

I am not alone! My 1996 Plymouth has left me once and for all. My transmission died on our way home from vacation yesterday. I have 2 more payments on it and the wheels cannot even hit the pavement! I have had so many problems. The transmission has been replaced once already! The Check Engine light has a mind of it's own and stays on until it gets good and tired. The wiper controls blink out of control and never stop. The A/C works only when it wants to. The brakes have been replaced so many times that it is not even funny. I guess the real question is - " What is right with the Plymouth Grand Voyager?". I will NEVER purchase another brand remotely similar to a Plymouth.

My 1993 Plymouth Grand Voyager LE was my dream vehicle when I purchases it in 1996. It had 125,000KM on it. 21 days later, I was hit by an out of control Buick, and flipped into a ditch. Amazingly, the van survived. The only repairs needed was the replacement of the drivers side back panel. Even the power equipment was working fine while upside down in the ditch.

One year later, my transmission needed work. 3rd gear was slipping. I didn't have any warranty so my ex-husband and his friend replaced the transmission with one from a scrap yard. 2 yrs later it needed replacing again. Now I find it's slipping again. But just like Microsoft, all I have to do is turn off the car, and restart and the transmission works, till I turn it off and park. Then it's hit & miss and a lot of praying that it will work properly, next time I start it.

Currently, I have no A/C, the Heating fan only works on HIGH and on defrost only. The radio is temper-mental. I have 238,500KM on it, and I'm in the market for another vehicle. But rest assured, it will NOT be another Chrysler mini-van.

I bought my 96 Grand Voyager in 99 and am kicking myself for not reading these comments before I bought it. Other than the recalls and engine overheating problem I was lucky so far, now the transmission is dying. I need to keep the engine running for 15-20 minutes before the transmission would work. The dealer says it needs to be replaced. The van is a piece of junk, I would never buy another Chrysler.

Just got our 96 Grand Voyager SE out of the transmission shop for the second time since May '02 and within 24 hours it seems to be slipping out of drive. The last time this occurred about 3 days before before a large puddle of transmission fluid showed up on the driveway. Luckily our mechanic gave us a 1 year/12K warranty so we only had to pay the initial $1500 for the first fix and nothing more since. I have to admit that we've got almost 140K miles on it so we aren't as bad off as those with problems under 100K miles. We've got new car dealers in town who guarantee $4000 for a trade-in no matter what the condition. Since this baby is paid off, perhaps it is time to make a trade.

We have had four mini-vans from Chrysler. Three of these were the Plymouth's and one is a Chrysler. The motors seem to go on forever (Our last Plymouth Voyager had 220,000 miles on the motor when we hit something.) However, the transmissions and bodies are a constant headache. All have had transmission work. The Plymouth we currently drive had the transmission replaced at 85,000 miles and we are doing it again at 137,000 miles. For those of you who buy new that may sound like a lot of miles, but we have driven high mileage Pontiac's that have not given us half the grief. We continue to, but only because I don't like the body styles on the other vans.
