1997 Plymouth Voyager SE review from North America
"Vehicle is a decent van"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Belt issue where the belt comes off and shreds to
pieces, and if it stays on then it squeals, also water pump went bad. But for all you who have had this issue with the belt, well here it is THE FIX.
Now the first few steps I advise not to take unless you have to.
1. Replace belt tensioner pulley, that didn’t work.
2. Replace belt idler pulley, that didn’t work either.
3. Replace alternator because I thought it was the squeal, didn’t work.
4. Replace power steering pump and pulley to get rid of the squeal, also didn’t work.
THE REAL FIX
Now to what does work, buy a regular belt so it has the deeper grooves in it. Then get a tensioner pulley off a Pontiac 3800 engine, it's plastic with raised sides. And finally get the snow shield from Chrysler installed and be happy. The pulley of the 3800 engine is the same size as the oem on the van, but is plastic which eliminates the squeal and has raised sides to hold the belt better, and the shield goes up even further on the pulley sides to help keep the belt on even more, and that’s it.
I got the pulley from a junkyard for 10 bucks, the belt was 25, and the shield was 14, so for a grand total of 49 dollars you should be good. Any questions let me know.
Oh, and one more thing, the air conditioning condenser is right behind the power steering pump, which puts out water when the ac is on. I recommend inserting a hose in there and strapping it down to the lowest point you can, to avoid letting water get on the belt that way.
