I drive it really really hard, the engine is too small for the size of the car and I push it hard, but it has held up really good.
Replaced the distribitor twice, wiper pump, some others that I can't think of.
I broke something on it again when I wasn't paying attention and ran over a cememt parking stop thing, and it scraped along the entire bottom of the car.
Not a highway car, it doesn't have enough engine to go at high speeds.
But overall I really like it, and I wouldn't get rid of it unless necessary.
The car is horrible on gas when you have the A/C on, and it's really really loud, again I say a 4 cylinder is too small for that size of car, it's a 4 door sedan, and in perfect condition inside and out.
I have a 4 cylinder Pontiac 6000 as well and I agree it could use a bit more power. However, even though it's top speed is a bit less than a 110km/h on the highway (which I find real bad, for obvious reasons) the acceleration is better than on the small Asian 4 cylinder cars (I drove a 95 special edition Civic on a regular basis, so I can compare the two). On the bottom line, I think it is a good car overall and it amazes me that there's so little rust on it even though it is an '86 model that has never had any anti-rust treatment (especially with our eastern Canadian winters that cause thousands of tons of salt to be dropped on the streets every year). The only thing I may add is that I am sorry to see that Pontiac is not still making this car today and replaced it with less reliable models (global economics, I suppose). Tough.
I own a 1986 6000 too and I too agree it is slightly under powered, but it does have some get-up and go the previous owner ran it into a ditch and then I got it, and I am now in the process of replacing the bumper, grille, right front fender, and A-arm, but yes it is a great around town car.
