1989 Pontiac Bonneville SE review from North America
"There is no other car which compares, truely a marvel of American engineering"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
This is a very powerful car, it consumes a new alternator every 4 years or so.
Air Conditioning stopped working around 125,000 km
Catalytic converter was replaced at 160,000 km.
I finally had to replace the muffler at 235,000 km.
Electronic Control Module went around 250,000
The control buttons on the steering wheel failed to work after 150,000 km. (Its too bad because they were really cool, they still impress people)
Odometer stopped rolling at 181,712 km (Speedometer still functions)
Back doors occasionally seize up and will not open after 250,000 km
Despite all of these, only minor pieces of the car have gone. The main componentry such as the powertrain, and fuel system are still original.
General comments?
The bonneville mixes the stylish beauty and gadgetry of a luxery car with the beast like power of a traditional American Muscle car.
The 3800 has a lot of guts and power when needed.
Yet the engine is very smooth and so is the handling.
All of its passengers seat comfortably.
Lots of cool gadgets to impress your friends.
My dad bought the Bonneville new in 1988 and we have owned it since. Its never let us down once, surving through countless missions.
Four other people drove it before me now I have the privilage of piloting this marvel of technology.
Even at its present age of 14 years and 275,000 km all on original engine, tranny and drive train, it still has enough power to move around effiecently.
I always thought this car was from the future, it had so many standard options, ABS, power everything, that even cars much newer from the 90's never even dreamed off.
A lot of people have told me that these cars never die. I'm still a teenager and this is all I can afford. I'm hoping it will last untill I get a new car some day. Its hard to think of it not starting up as it has never had a problem doing. The only problem would be finding a truely even substitute. Perhaps I will even have another Bonnie.
