1960 Pontiac Catalina review from North America

"It's a classic!!!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

It took a lot of work to get it running. all it took was new oil, new fuel pump and new gas to get it started.

New brakes, belts, fuel pump, maintenance stuff

i need to adjust the carburetor or something because it is running funny

a few rust spots on the roof, just surface

the heater core was rotted out, so that is gone and I need to find another one

when I turn right, I have gas, and when I turn left or strait, I don't have any!...need to get that fixed

front passanger window track fell in so sometimes the window slides down over bumps.

General comments?

I inherited this car from my great-grandmother after she passed, and she bought it new off the lot in 1960! it is black with a white roof, and it is all original except for what it took to get it running. the interior is blue and white, and its perfect. however, it has been sitting since 1993.

The floor in the rear is rusted out and when I started it for the first time the exhaust powdered away, and so I can smell it through the floor.

For its age, its not bad. when going over hills, it floats and you can barely feel speed bumps. it is a very smooth ride and I really like it. the gear selector is a bit odd though, as reverse is all the way at the bottom and it has hi and low forward drives. weird. I am quite impressed with the power. even though it runs in MONOTONE, I accelerates very quickly and roars past people on the freeway. the drums all around are dangeruous and EXTREMELY STIFF. I've locked them up numerous times, and when they do, the weight and momentum jsut carries the car and you really don't end up stopping for a long time. at least 3 times now I have sailed right through an intersection because of it and its funny to see people's looks as I go sliding past them. speaking of looks, WOW!!! this car has some weird lines, and it gets soo many stares and thumbs-up and shouts. obviousley, this car is rare because I have never seen another, at an auto show, on the roads, or on the internet.

The windshield is totally something else, they way it wraps around into were the door should be throws people off a lot. this is definately quite the project car, but it is also my daily driver, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$, so I hope it is built well.

I believe that it is a car like this that inspires the love/hate relationship I read about on this website. It truly is an American Classic and it will stay in my family as long as I am alive, and hopefully longer still.
