1987 Pontiac Fiero GT review from North America
"I love this car!!!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The clutch has driven me crazy. The damn pedal that bends on the hydraulic system caused me to replace the master and slave.
The exhaust manifold on the firewall side of the engine cracked and caused a leak and sooty rear window. I think those springs that hold up the exhaust are not strong enough and allow the exhaust to put a lot of weight on that manifold.
The EGR tube is a pain in the ass. It has cracked on me twice. I finally replaced it with the IRM stainless, flexible replacement.
If your dash lights go - check the resistor under the dash, on the right side, next to the steering column. Replace it or just take it apart and clean up the contacts!
General comments?
I put a set of suspension techniques lowering springs and the addco sway bar. What a difference. I can't always keep up with the newer iron out there, but when we get to the twisties, they get a big surprise...
I rebuilt the engine myself to get a little more bang for the buck. The engine was cheap to rebuild with a 30 over rebore, rebuilt heads, and a crane compucam. You can really feel the cam!
The Grand Am brake upgrade is a real improvement over the stockers. Leave the rears alone and you retain the parking brakes and get a nice increase in the stopping power.
