2008 Pontiac G8 GT and base V-6 review from North America

"A world-class sport sedan"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing. Brand new.

General comments?

First of all, I DO NOT own a G8. I normally don't put much stock in reports based on test drives or rentals, but was so impressed with the two G8's I have driven that I wanted to add a review. There are so many in my area that I am surprised there are as yet no reviews on this incredible car.

I drove both a base V-6 and a 361hp GT model with the silky smooth 6-speed automatic. The V-6 was more than adequate in power, and the V-8 will give the Mustang GT a very good run for its money, if not leave it far behind.

The Aussie-based car (it's basically a Holden) is very aggressive, and easy to mistake for a BMW from the front. It is clean, sporty, and one of the true sports sedans of our day. The price (between about $22,000 for a base and $29,000 for a GT) is less than HALF of BMW's that are not as fast or good looking.

I found the GT ride just a tad harsh, but not nearly as bad as my 2007 Mustang. It had a very taut, sporty feel and handled better than the Mustang. The response was quick and instantaneous even with the V-6. The transmission is typical silky smooth, quick shifting GM perfection. I also own a 2001 Pontiac and a 2003 GMC, and nothing beats GM automatics for smooth and precise shifts.

Due to escalating fuel prices, I'd recommend the very affordable and more economical 6. It was quite sporty in feel and response, and no slouch in acceleration. The prices of these cars are highly competitive with Mustang, Charger, Camaro, Fusion and Malibu.

Since I only drove these cars about 10 miles each, I cannot give any objective review on reliability, however both our current GM's (including the 8-year-old Pontiac) have been 100% reliable with never a single problem of any kind. I feel the G8 will be a very solid and reliable car.

My ONLY gripe with these cars is the NAME. Pontiac has started using names that sound like TAX FORMS!! G5, G6, G8. I'd love to see this car called something more appropriate to a sport sedan, such as Bonneville or Grand Prix.
