2000 Pontiac Grand Am SE review from North America
"My second Grand Am and my last GM product"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Just like the last Grand Am that I bought (1985) this one looked like a lot of car for the money. Good looks, sport sedan styling and lots of good options for the price. However, after the car reached the age of 5 years, or around 85,000 miles repairs have been astronomical. On my '85 model, it would have been cheaper to have replaced the entire drive train all at once rather than piecemeal. The 2000 has had similar problems: recently a $1700 repair due to faulty "sensors",whatever that means. Drivers side window and passenger side rear window regulator replacement. Faulty fuel pressure regulator ($300), leaking head gasket ($600),drivers seat back will only lock in positions that do not suit me, cruise control does not work (about 6 mos. ago). Now (9/6/07) the blower motor has crapped out and we have A/C only when the car is going fast enough to force air in through the vent system. All in all not a bad car if you only plan to keep it for 1-3 years. After that, let the buyer beware. By the way, my brother-in-law has a '99 and is pretty much in the same type of situation.
General comments?
Good deal as far as options per $ if you only keep it for 1-3 yrs.
Mine is fully equipped, all elec. windows, locks, seats; sun/moon roof, nice CD/stereo, cruise, and @ 10,500 I got it at 1/2 sticker price @2yrs. old.
One of the worst deals I ever got; repairs and inconvienience have assured that I will never buy another GM vehicle.
My wife drives the grand am; I drive a '98 Ford Ranger (4-cyl.) that since it was new has needed 2 sets of tires, an alternator and a serpentine belt...period. It is @ 187,000 miles. Nu-ff said.
