1993 Pontiac Grand Am SE review from North America
"This car is great I have learned so much!!!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The transmission was redone by the dealer my grandpa got it from before they sold it to him.
2 weeks later the water pump went out.
Put new tires on at 189k 387$ still have 1/2 tread left.
K&N air filter very nice I got 32.7mpg when I drove from Minn to Mont. I had my cruise set at 75-80 the whole time. oh I did drop to 28mpg when I went through the mount's.
New brakes and front struts shortly after that... the old struts were fine, but I liked the stiff shock style that was in my audi... brakes replaced again 207k.
New speakers old ones were dieing.
New fan motor. the fan got frozen with snow and ice and burned out the old motor ... I did it my self for just the price of the motor 30$ or so.. dealer would have charged 100+
I replaced left and right ball joints bushings and right c-v (half) shaft at 210k dealer 1300$ + an alignment I talked my mech that I have do all the work I can't, or don't have the time for. I payed 220$ for parts after core charge he put it all in and did the alignment for a total of 230$ I save almost 1000$ I had told him to check the transmission it wasn't shifting right he put in a new shift cable that was included in the 230$ also.
Replaced thermostat at 214k did that my self 6$ yea
6$ for the part and the seal.. dealer 70$-110$
My heater core my need to be replaced I am going to try flush it out I think it is clouged, if I do have to replace it it will coast 30$-40$ I am not even going to ask what the dealer would charge.
I am going to have to put in a new front left wheel bearing not sure on coast of part I will be doing that myself to... the mech at tires plus said it would coast 800$ I think... my mech would beat that no problem.. but we will see if I need him too...
My steering just started to wine 3 days ago... no big deal for me... I hope.. hahaha.
The fog lights elect. system is bad or something is these cars I swear I replace the driver side fog light every few months I even put one in that was 18$ a piece and I just noticed it is out... I am just going to keep buying cheap ones I guess.
I replaced the fuel filter a while ago- price I can't remember
as well as on of the coil packs -price 30 or so that took 3 minutes to install.
The rear drum brakes do not auto adjust for wear in these cars which is stated in the manual. so once in a while you need to acc in rev. and push the brakes fairly hard and that is how they adjust... if you don't do this you go through brakes much faster... I say this because I read a few reviews that stated they brake problems.
General comments?
My grandpa gave me this car and well I have takeN care of it... 80% of the repairs were things that need to be done on most cars after 175k... also I am not a Mech by any means, all I did was by a 25$ repair manual and asked the guys at O'Reilly Auto Parts a few?'s here and there... this stuff was not hard to do.. my girl friend Jess also did a lot of these repairs with me and she didn't even know how to change the oil when she started.
By the way I still own this one and I just bought another one same year grand am, but but it is a GT it needs some repairs... no problem for Jess and I:)
