1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT review from North America
"Good deal"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I bought my 99 Grand Am almost 4 months ago and have no regrets. Maybe it's just that I got lucky but I haven't seen any of the glaring flaws reported by other people on here. Sure the AC/heat only works on 4 and 5 and the radio is fuzzy (minor fix that I haven't gotten around to yet) but other than these issues there hasn't been much wrong with it. It's not even like its low on miles. I mean it already had 130,000+ on it when I bought it.
One other MINOR annoyance is the steering assist in mine is slightly off. The car will have a tendency to drift ever so slightly in the direction I last made a sharp turn in.
Ex. I turn left at an intersection and it will drift left for a mile or so.
But this isn't a problem because the drift is so minor you barely notice if you even have one hand on the wheel. and I don't go around driving without my hands all that often.
The good things about the car really outweigh any negative comments I have. With the v6 I have no problems pulling out, even when rushed. I don't think I've taken the engine above 3000rpm yet, but that's enough to get me up to 40 in just a couple seconds. No shortage of power here.
I also love the moonroof, which, when buying it, was one of my major concerns. To my surprise (and delight) there is nothing wrong with it. You can hear the motor work when it tries to open it, but on a car that's over half my age i'd expect it.
The sound system is good, but I've found out the stock antenna has a tendency to come loose.
Its also easy to work on since everything is for the most part easily accessible. The fuse boxes are on either side of the dash and are easy to get to thanks to a simple pop off panel. It wasnt even that hard to clean out my AC/Heat fan (which jammed due to rust?). just took out 5 screws holding in the glove compartment and then it was right there.
General comments?
If you do get a used one make sure you know of the common problems.
-heating/ac has a tendency to either go out or to only work on the higher settings. Its usually fixed by replacing the blower resistor (stock one corrodes).
-radio antenna comes loose.
And the general old car stuff like window motors breaking down and seats not being as able to be adjusted as they used to be.
But other than that, i'd suggest you buy one. just take it for a test drive first.
