This is the family loaner, so an array of things have gone wrong due to the fact that we keep passing the car around everyone in my family when it's needed.
However, the engine has not needed a rebuild and maintenance for this car has been largely neglected over the years, however, the darn thing keeps running every day like nothing.
Recently replaced motor mounts at 170000 miles. Also replaced parts in front end steering array. Minor leaks of tranny fluid and oil, but nothing else.
As I personally dislike GM for several reasons, this little car was perhaps the best one GM built in terms of maintenance costs and reliability.
I would recommend it to anyone as a first car (it's pretty solid and safe).
Makes a great economy sports car, hellishly fast too.
...are you kidding? I have an 87 Grand Am, and I don't think it's very fast... how fast do you mean? It is quite a funny looking granny car that never quits though, and I got a really good deal on mine, so I'm happy never the less, even though it doesn't really display my personality...at all
I have had my '87 Grand Am for about 10 years now. It has been the best car I have ever owned. The engine is a Turbo 3.0 liter. Very fast, when I need it to be. Have kept up with general maintenance, oil changes, etc., as one would with any car. When I keep it well maintained, it treats me well. Fabulous car!
