1993 Pontiac Grand Am SE review from North America

"Good work car; also good for a beginning driver"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

MFD recall on the head gasket a week after I bought it; replaced for free.

Eats brakes; seems like I replace them every year. not cheap; $400 each time.

Replaced one wheel bearing at $250.

Replaced alternator 3 times in 212500 miles and counting.

Replaced water pump at 200000.

Replaced vacuum hoses and water hoses. car tends to overheat in the summer months.

Slow oil leak under engine somewhere.

Condensation also found in oil during regular 3000 mile oil changes; but it's not as bad anymore.

A/C is worthless; no blowing power.

Passenger side under dash leaks like a sieve when it rains; water drains into glove compartment, floorboard and unsuspecting passengers!!!

Driver's side manual window will not roll all the way down.

Center console door for lighter/ash try broke on the hinges.

Transmission console lights are out and impossible to replace.

Rear de-fogger quit after 50000; I'm told $250+ to fix; waste of money and you can't do it yourself!

Fog lights burn out every 2-3 months.

Shocks need to be maintained every couple of years.

Dashboard creeks and cracks with annoying sounds of rubbing plastic.

Temperature and a/c knobs are broken off; cheap plastic with metal inserts are not a good design.

Electric locks, lock when the car is put into drive and are supposed to unclock when car is turned off. they don't unlock anymore. hundreds of dollars to fix.

Mechanics scratch their heads and just look at you when you mention that you have a quad 4 engine and it needs a repair.

General comments?

SEATS ARE COMFORTABLE AND THE CABIN IS ROOMY ON THIS 4-DOOR MODEL.

LOTS OF TRUNK SPACE.

IT'S HAD ITS REPAIRS BOTH MAJOR AND MINOR, BUT FOR 9 YEARS AND 212000 MILES LATER, IT STILL RUNS VERY WELL WITH 28-30mpg ON EVERY TANK. THAT'S INCREDIBLE I THINK FOR A PONTIAC GRAND AM. NO CAR PAYMENTS ANYMORE, SO I'LL DRIVE IT UNTIL IT'S DEAD.
