Immediately after I purchased the car the service engine soon light turned on. After consulting with several of my friends on what the problem could be we came to the conclusion it must be the oxygen sensor... After replacing the sensor the light remained on and I continued to ignore the light, I was on my way to school when I hit the gas and the car shuddered and panted it's way up to 50 if I pressed the pedal down more than one quarter of the way it persisted well $450 later a mechanic had replaced the fuel position sensor and it started to run better.
An extremely foul odor was being emitted from the catalytic converter. This was a result of a too rich running condition presented by the fuel position sensor I replaced it with a high flow Cat Back exhaust system.
The transmission went out and $1700 later the car is in running condition again.
I now own a 4250 dollar Grand Am.
This car is fast, it will take almost any daily runner with ease It handles a little loosely, but that is being remedied by installing a track bar system.
After installing a Turbo charger my friends 1992 Camaro has a hard time keeping up with me!

To those that would ignore the "check engine soon" light... let this be a warning. Always have the emissions system checked by an expert. The damage that can occur from an improper diagnosis can be very costly.
Correction, he went from a Porsche 944 to a Pontiac. The 944 was probably an 80s model, not much better than any Pontiac, perhaps worse.
