The volume control doesn't work properly. I replaced this with a new head unit.
The molding on the doors and beside the windsheild has warped.
The carpet along the door panels has pulled away.
I have found water in the spare tire well many of times. The moisture has cause the cardboard piece that covers the well to warp and not lay flat.
The driver side window would go up and down slowly. I took it in to be fixed. The window worked fine for a few days, but now doesn't work at all.
I had to replace the wheel bearing on both sides.
The power steering pump went out.
The heater/AC only works on 3 or higher.
The gas gage will go from full to empty in a second. This seems to happen not long after filling up.
The most troubling thing is the thump the car makes when you make turns. I have had it to three places to find out why. Only one place could even give me an answer. They said the wheel bearing that was just replaced was a bad part. I took it back and got another. The problem still exist. Has this happened to anyone else? If so please tell me how I may fix this.
I love the look of the grand am, I always have.
The car is great for long trips.
I will never own another grand am. However I love pontiac's performance. I'll stick to the grand prix from now on. My husband has had three with no major problems. If something has gone wrong with them, at least they can tell you what it is.
I cannot afford another car at this time. So for anyone that has a family and better things to spend your money on, the grand am is not for you.
The problem with the heater and A/C blower not working except on 3 or higher is a relatively simple fix. In the passenger side front footwell is the fan motor assembly. On it is a resistor block held in by two screws which are somewhat difficult to get to. Remove the screws and pull out the resistor block. If there are black traces along the board, indicating burnt resistors, replace it with a dealer part. I believe mine cost 16 dollars or so.
Aside from that, I understand your pain. I have replaced a water pump, a lower intake manifold gasket, strut mounts, and the rack and pinion. The real funny part is that I still own and love the car. What's up with that?
