"Cheap, Reliable, SLOW"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

We put many miles on this car without many problems.

Coil went out @ 120k miles. Dealership charged $350 to replace it. Could have got a coil from a parts yard for $10 and put it in myself if I would have know it would cost that much.

Needed struts @ 100k miles, but never got around too it. It had many squeaks up front that were very annoying.

Alternator Out @ 80k miles.

Front windows froze up @ 120k miles.

Never had any problem with the head gasket as many other GA owners seem to have.

Overall very good for a car with that many miles on it.

General comments?

This car was very good in most aspects, nice interior (except for the squeaks!!), fairly roomy for such a small car. I put in an aftermarket stereo and the factory speakers sounded suprisingly good. Nice styling in and out. Sporty felling until you push it then you see what its all about. The body roll is very bad thew a corner. It has no power from the 2.3l SOHC Quad Four. (rated 115hp, fells like maby 100hp). This is definetly the shortfall of this car, no power, no handling, nothing in the performance area. This was suprising though since my other Grand Am's ('88 and '91) are much faster. They both have a 2.3l DOHC Quad Four. (rated 155hp) I can have a buddy pull up in front of me in the 1993, I'm behind in the 1991, go and pass him wile he's at full throttle with ease. Its simply pathetic how slow this car was. It was wrecked @ 175k, but was still running good up untill then. If you want performance Get one with the DOHC instead of the SOHC.

Hey...I own a '93 Grand Am with a 2.3L DOHC Quad 4. This car is by far the BEST I have ever owned. I bought it for $200 with 174,000 miles on it. It now has over 208,000!! And it is still running strong. And believe me I abuse the car regularly. My dad, a mechanic, thought the head gasket was cracked, turns out it wasn't!! YES!! I got a great car for a whole lot of nothing. The only things we have fixed are the timing chain...wasn't as bad as we thought... and we replaced the alternator. It is using antifreeze right now, needs a new water pump. Which is not a big deal, because they're cheap, and I can fix it myself. ~Shari
