1997 Pontiac Grand Am GT Coupe review from North America
"My Grand Am GT has been a fun, attractive, but not quite reliable little car"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Tires and front brakes at 50k.
Alternator and Battery at 55k.
Starter at 61k.
Clutch, Flywheel and Shift cables at 69k.
All 4 brakes at 80k.
Rear Main Seal is currently going at 80k (Started leaking oil at 75k)
Air Conditioning Compressor Clutch needs replaced. (makes grinding noise common on GM) It's been doing that the majority of the time I've had the car.
Steering column broke.
Seatbelt trim broke.
Interior trim broken around passenger side door when I got it.
Paint fades off spoiler. (common on GM plastic/fiberglass parts)
Infinite noises.
I'm forgetting something guaranteed.
General comments?
Having owned two of these cars, I know a little bit about them. I have owned both an SE sedan with an automatic and a GT coupe with a 5 speed. Both cars were 2.4l 4 cylinders. The first (SE sedan) I only had for eight months as my first car until I was hit totaling it. This car never gave me a bit of problems. Literally three days later I purchased the GT coupe. Before I tear into my car I will say that it has never left my stranded and I like to go fast so I stepped on it from time to time. Now with that said above is the list of problems I have had with it. Due to the rear main seal problem I plan to get rid of it this summer because I do not want to put the cost of another major repair into a vehicle that is only worth $2200. The things I like about my Grand Am is performance and fuel consumption. This little will get up and go past all your Honda Civics, Focuses, etc. It has great torque and decent high end power. I like the engine overall. The gas mileage is exceptional. On my way down to college on 81 I get 32mpg at 80+ miles per hour. The interior is accommodating and comfy. The gauges are very easy to see and read. It's been a good little car, but there is no reason for such problems with so little mileage.
