1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE review from North America
"When it's not in the shop, it's fun to drive"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Power steering fluid line went out at 45,000 miles.
Coolant Heat Sensor went out at 50,000 miles. Caused the car to leak fluid and overheat.
Alternator went out at 65,000 miles.
Transmission went out at 85,000 miles. Cost was $3500.00 to rebuild.
Goes through brakes really fast. Helpful hint: Do not buy replacement rotors from the dealer. They are really thin and wear out fast.
While the air conditioner still works, it will only work on the highest setting so it's all or nothing.
Currently leaking oil, coolant, and power steering fluid. I have yet to find the sources of these leaks.
Currently overheating and stalling every once in a while.
Weatherstripping around doors and windows are peeling back and paint is chipping in several places.
General comments?
The only reason I still own this car is because I would not feel right selling it to someone knowing what I know about it.
The engine runs hard and fast. Very fun to drive. It has sports car-like power and handling.
Be prepared to spend time and money fixing all types of problems. The problems listed above are only the major ones.
If you decide to purchase this car, I strongly suggest you invest in a very good extended warranty with a low deductible. You will need it.
